It is with great sadness that I have to bring you the news that a long standing and much loved member of MRUFC, Hayden Bowen, passed away on Monday evening. Hayden has been a member – and fixture – at the rugby club for more than 70 years and probably clocked up in excess of 1,000 games for his club until finally hanging up his boots when he was well into his 60’s.
Hayden started playing as a teenager back at the old London Road ground in the 50’s and following his National Service, continued to play for Macc. through the years at Tytherington and Priory Park. An ‘old school’ prop, Hayden played for the 1st XV for a number of years before dropping down the sides, and along with Pete Harper Sr. started the extremely successful and sociable Veterans team back in 1975 where he carried on playing for some 30 years.
Everyone who met Hayden, always said what a lovely man he was, a real gentleman, a good friend and a true club man who, despite suffering from a serious stroke a couple of years back, still wanted to do his bit for his club and regularly manned the gate on a Saturday afternoon, come rain or shine. Macclesfield Rugby Club have lost an absolute gem in Hayden and the club will be a sadder place without Hayden around.
Our thoughts go out to wife Sue, daughters Sally & Katie who, together with Hayden’s Grandchildren, made him extremely proud.
On Saturday for the Macc. v. Plymouth Albion game, the flags will be at half-mast and there will be a minutes silence in honour of a much loved member of our rugby club, who will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Details of Hayden’s funeral will be shown on the club website as soon as they are known, so please make the effort to come and say goodbye to a great friend of Macclesfield Rugby Club – Hayden Bowen.
