If you received a phone call telling you you’d been chosen to be the captain of your team, or manager of your department at work, how would you feel? Obviously you’d initially be very pleased, but there would inevitably also be one or two conflicting emotions at work there too – whether that’s nervousness, worry or apprehension. Well, that’s exactly what happened to new Macclesfield Blues Club captain, Mike Finnemore. One minute he’s happily sitting there at University doing his […]

With the new season less than 6 weeks away, preparations are well in hand at Macclesfield Rugby Club. The squad are looking fit and well, and are keen to get playing competitively once more. Hopefully the series of pre-season games should help with conditioning and improve match sharpness, but all the players know that there’s no substitute for the real thing. It’s indisputable that life in National 1 will be tough. But if there’s one consolation it’s that, unlike last […]
What do you do when you want to recruit the best players for your team? Well, if you’re one of the big-spending rugby clubs, the answer seems to be you throw money at the problem. However, if you’re working to a tight budget that option just isn’t available to you. What you have to do instead is recruit strategically.
Are you looking forward to your summer holiday this year, and daydreaming about your time in the sun? If you are, then no doubt some of the Macclesfield Blues squad will be looking on with envy. Their holidays unfortunately are over, as Head Coach, Giles Heagerty, has already got the boys back in training in preparation for life in National League 1. Pre-season training started last week, and by all accounts started with a bang. Then again, if you want […]
The new season may still be some time away, but anyone with an interest in Macclesfield Blues will be itching for the first ball to be kicked in anger in September. They’ll also no doubt be wondering who will be pulling on the shirt at Priory Park when the season finally starts. So this week when Macclesfield Rugby caught up with Head Coach, Giles Heagerty, we thought we’d ask those very questions: which members of the 2013/14 are likely to […]
So now we know the score. Macclesfield Blues will kick off the 2014/15 National League 1 season with homes games against Richmond and Fylde. Two home games is obviously a great advantage for a team with a good home record; but two games against teams who finished second and fourth respectively in the league last season might also be viewed as a kind of baptism of fire. But should the supporters worry? Should they be scared about being thrown into […]
Have you ever watched the coach during a game at Priory Park? Have you ever wondered what made them pick the team, what was going through their mind during the game, or been critical of some of the changes they might have made? We’ve all done it at one time of other. Being an armchair coach is easy after all. Being an actual coach is another ball game entirely. The bucks stops with you.
The last experience of life in National League 1 may not have ended positively for Macclesfield Blues, but there can be little doubt that the team is excited by the prospect of high-level rugby returning to Priory Park. The successful sojourn in National League 2 has simply whetted the appetite, and the coaches and players are looking forward to mixing it with the big boys once more. But after the disappointment of being relegated in 2012/13, what can the team […]
Although next season might seem like an eternity away, Head Coach, Giles Heagerty, has already been busy planning for the challenges that Macclesfield Blues will inevitably face in National League 1. He’s appointed his new management team and set out his vision for the Macclesfield Rugby Club’s future. He’s also made some brave decisions in terms of his choice of playing and coaching staff. Many of these decisions were inevitable after Geoff Wappett and Andy Northey moved on to pastures […]
