Since 1874, Macclesfield Rugby Club has been at the heart of the town and the season starting next September we will be celebrating 150 years of Macclesfield Rugby; this is a huge landmark for the whole club and we’d like you to join us.

We need you to help us mark this momentous sporting anniversary with a series of special events and matches taking place throughout the year – and the opportunity to assist in organising and participating in the celebrations – all in the True Blue spirit of Macclesfield Rugby!

Since the club`s inception back in 1874, the club has been at the heart of the local community. From a ‘fighting start’ in 1874, via the fields of cricket, association football, and a pub car park, the rugby club has passed through Fallibroome on its way to a first permanent home in Tytherington. The laying of the Silk Road across a significant chunk of the Tytherington ‘field of dreams’ then forced a return to its Fallibroome origins, and where we find ourselves today, Priory Park. Given that William Webb Ellis picked up the ball at Rugby school in 1823, we are
amongst the oldest rugby clubs and 150 years is a magnificent milestone to commemorate – we would like to invite you to become involved in any way you can and to do your part.

It is important we have clear overarching aims for the programme of activities under the umbrella of this unique event. The group have recognised any events or activities held should contribute to the following aims;

Make a substantial contribution to the long-term sustainability of our club and enhance its growth potential.
Contribute positively to the local (Macclesfield) community.
Increase participation in sport in general and in rugby specifically both at the rugby club and in the local community
Be financially beneficial to the club.

We want everyone to feel part of this special year and also benefit from any of the funds raised. By focusing all 150 revenue on improving the drainage, surfaces and grass on all of our pitches, we will have improved the facilities for the entire club and all its members.

We a currently gathering the costs against what we would like to achieve and our targets will be published in due course. Although the planning group are leading the work on some of the larger events, we are very keen that individuals or different sections of the club organise their own events. We want to ensure a light touch in overseeing this activity and what conditions there are, are there to align the various events in the best way and make sure we comply with any agreements with sponsors.

Anyone can organise an event but if you do could I we you to:

Let us know in plenty of time so that we can help with promotion and avoid any clashes with other events scheduled around the same time. We will also let you know of any sponsor’s requirements, such as logos, that you may need to use in promotional material.

Ensure you use the 150th-year branding and include it in any promotional material you produce.

Ensure that everyone knows that any funds raised go to the 150th fund for pitch improvement.

It is not a requirement for any event to raise funds, but most will and even small amounts will contribute to the overall aim.
