Calling all rugby players: your Club needs you

Are you a lover of the oval ball game? Maybe you’ve recently moved to the area and want to join a local rugby club? Perhaps you’ve not played the game for a few years and have started to get itchy feet and fancy a kick around with a few like-minded souls? Maybe you’ve never played the game before but watched England battle away in South Africa over the ‘summer’ and are now thinking, I wouldn’t mind trying my hand at that? Well, we have some good news for you. Macclesfield Rugby Club is currently looking for new social players, and you may well be exactly the type of person we need. The chances of winning the lottery are slim at best, but this time ‘it really could be you’.

If you think you might have what it takes, then you should pop on down to Priory Park and become the latest recruit of Cheshire’s friendliest rugby team. It doesn’t matter what your level of ability might be, Macclesfield Rugby Club will still welcome you with open arms. We love our sport, and we suspect that you do too. So you don’t have to be able to kick like Jonny Wilkinson or be as precociously talented as Owen Farrell, though obviously we’ll take that if you are. Macclesfield Rugby Club offers rugby opportunities for all ages and abilities from Under 6s right through to the 50 plus age-group. Age is a number: it’s definitely not a barrier for us. If you fancy showcasing your skills, developing your ability or just meeting up regularly with like-minded rugby fanatics, then Macclesfield Rugby Club is the place for you.

If you’d like to know what you’d be getting into, then here’s a potted history of the Club and a bit of information about our current structure. Macclesfield RUFC has been around for quite some time. The Club was originally formed in 1877, and have played at a number of grounds before pitching up at Priory Park in 1980. The irony of this is that it’s only a stone’s throw from where the Club first plied its trade. Macclesfield RUFC was one of original 12 clubs that took part in the RFU’s structured league pilot scheme – the North West Girobank League; a pilot which led ultimately to  the establishment of the current league system which runs throughout the country. Macclesfield Rugby Club has played in this league since the mid-1980’s and can proudly say it has never been relegated. Hopefully with your help, it never will be.

Macclesfield Rugby Club currently has over 1,000 social members and, though this number might be impressive, we are still looking to expand. We currently run 11 Mini and Junior teams, a Junior and Senior Colts teams and 4 Senior teams and a Veterans team. The first team, Macclesfield Blues, play in National League 1 and are one of the top 30 competitive rugby teams in the country. whilst our second team, Macclesfield Lions, finished as last season’s runners-up in the BMW Bateman Premier League. Macclesfield Thirds, captained by the ambitious Nick Smith, finished third in last season’s Raging Bull North West League 1: the highest placing in the history of the team and only one place lower than the Lions.

Macclesfield Fourths compete in the Raging Bull Northwest League 4 South, and have just completed yet another successful campaign. They gained promotion the previous year from Division 5 by winning both the league and cup. Don’t worry if you think you might be too young or old for this team: the current range encompasses every age from 17 to 50. If you’re good enough, you’re either old enough or young enough as the case might be. Macclesfield Fifths, also known as the Vets, will play the coming season in the Raging Bull North West League 5 South, having previously finished top of the league. They’re hoping for another successful season to match the achievements of all the other Macclesfield teams.

So, if you’re looking for a fresh challenge or just fancy pulling on your boots again and having a run out, then why not come down to Priory Park, Priory Lane, Macclesfield, SK10 4AF.  Training normally takes place for all teams on Thursday evenings starting at 7.00 pm.

All players are welcome; simply ring 0161827899 or contact the relevant team captain below, or e-mail info@macc.co.uk with full details of age, experience and position(s) played and join one of the most successful and progressive clubs in the North West with facilities that are second to none.
