There was a sense of intrigue and excitement around the club in the build-up to the first National 1 league match against Blaydon.
Not only was it most of the fan’s first glimpse of the new Blues signings, but it was the beginning of a new era under a new executive committee.
The warm weather came out to greet the players as they came out to start what was predicted to be a very competitive game.
Unfortunately (as sometimes is the case), the result went the other way and Blaydon went home with the win.
At the end of the day Blaydon were the better side, and were able to claim all five points.
Macclesfield were left with a mountain of a mission to get back into the game as they ended the first half 0-26 down.
There were glimpses of good rugby being played by Macclesfield in the second half, whether it was new signing Tom Cruse’s impressive debut performance, or the attacking flair that came from wingers Edd Stobart, Josh Fowles and full-back Jack Moorhouse.
New signings Tom Cruse, Matt Rhodes, Dave Marwick and Chris Townsend enjoyed their first team debuts and look to be settling in with the squad.
However the team performance felt like it still needed some time to gel and work out the pre-season rustiness.
We should not dwell on the result, but look forward to how the Blues will pick themselves up and fight back against Sedgley Park on Saturday 8th September.
On the same day, Sedgley Park lost at Rosslyn Park, 20-14, in a close match that left the Tigers with just one bonus point.
Also Ealing Trailfinders beat Coventry 37-13 away, and newly promoted Loughborough Students were thumped by Blackheath 57-20.
Elsewhere in the club, Macclesfield 2’s enjoyed a strong start to their season, with a 67-34 win against Lymm.
The 3rd and 4th team both suffered losses against the equivalent Trafford Metrovic teams, the 3’s score-line was 21-29, and the 4’s lost 29-43.
However the 5’s cruised to a comfortable win against Acton Nomads, winning 80-5.
And finally, the Senior Colts team missed out 15-48 against Caldy Senior Colts.
