The previous two weeks have seen two games and two losses for the Lions, it was important that they got back to winning ways this week, and they did just that and in quite some style. It was the turn of Vale of Lune to visit Priory Park and take on a rejuvenated Lions side, Luckett, McCarthy and Townsend all made a return to 2nd team rugby and all had a significant impact.
The game started well and the Lions took control, the majority of the possession went the Lions way but Vale hadn’t come to be walked over. They were forcing the Lions into quite a few mistakes early on and the game soon turned quite scrappy. Eventually the Lions gained some control, the set pieces had improved significantly on the previous weeks and the backs were getting some fantastic ball provided by Townsend. The Lions eventually went over courtesy of Hardwick who finished well in the corner. Before the half time whistle Hardwick went over for two more and the forwards managed to drive over for another 5 points, Macey converted 2 and at the whistle the Lions were 24-3 up. Unfortunately just before the half time whistle Sodha badly injured his leg and had to be carried off.
The half time chat was that of frustration from many of the senior players, they were correct in noting that the score should have been significantly more and it was important in the second half to keep disciple. The Lions went out with the intention of playing in the second half.
For the first time this season the Lions showed what they were actually capable of when they keep their discipline. For the few watching they were treated to some fantastic running rugby by the Lions. There were many tries scored in the second half, some great team tries and some good individual efforts which included one from Hardwick which took his tally up to 4, Jack Taylor also managed to jump onto the back of a maul and dropped down for a well earned try. Towards the end of the game Vale did manage to get over for a deserved try but were unable to convert, however the Lions managed to get straight back down underneath the Vale sticks.
The game finished with the score 73-8 to the Lions and a great second half performance. It was good for the Lions to get back to winning ways and also prove to themselves how well they can play when they knuckle down. It would be difficult to pick out individual performances as good games were had by everyone it will be important to carry those performances over to Chester next week.
