Widnes Senior Colts 17 – 3 Macclesfield Senior Colts

Despite taking the lead, the Senior Colts couldn’t cross the try line in reply to the three scores Widnes manufactured in the seventy minutes. The Blue’s front row battered the opposition’s try line for several phases of play, but the closest they got was to be adjudged held up by the referee. Tom Bamberger caught the eye with his distribution, commitment to the charge down and catching his opposite number and back row in possession, and was duly named Macclesfield’s Man of the Match. Sam Bancroft harried and tackled well, setting up good field position and Benji was a fingertip away from a cheeky interception try.

After weathering the Widnes attack for the first ten minutes of the first half, the Colts found decent field position to mount attacks of their own. The inventiveness was there in their back play, but the Widnes defence proved awkward to outflank. After twenty minutes, indiscipline by the hosts gave Ollie a second shot at goal from just outside the Widnes twenty two. Ollie converted the three points to give Blues a slender lead. Cam and Fozzie tackled gamely, more often than not regaining possession in the process. Macc looked in control, until the end of the half, when Widnes stretched the Blues’ defence, with their left winger making the most of the overlap to score close to the posts.

Macc kept their heads up in the second half, spending long periods probing the Widnes line. Scrums against the head and Dan’s lineout steals kept the Blues in the right part of the field. Crossy, Sean, Scott and Jonny took it in turns to batter the Widnes line from short range after a series of penalties. Tom, George and Charlie chased down the scrum   and fly half to force five metre scrums. All the pressure was to no avail as inaccuracies led to a series of missed chances, leaving Widnes to break away twice to score long range tries.

Here Tommy Taylor (Defence Coach) gives his views on the match. The lads now head into a well-deserved break, and face Blackburn up at Ramsgreave Drive in a fortnight.
