Macclesfield Senior Colts 19 – Liverpool St Helens Senior Colts 0

Macclesfield Senior Colts maintained their undefeated home record, scoring 19 points without reply against Liverpool St Helens. Despite losing personnel to the sin bin, the Blues consolidated their first half lead with a controlled second half performance, playing rugby in the right areas of the pitch. Benji Nicholls harried relentlessly from the back row and was rewarded with a try in the second half to cap his Man of the Match performance. Ben Hadfield was prominent in the loose and Dan ruled the lineout again. The backline’s defence remained solid in their own twenty two, and the scrum went well, with Scott managing a few strikes against the head.

A similar start to the first half as in previous games saw the Blues conceding territory. The opposition’s two burly centers made early gains ball in hand, but after the Blues started to tackle at calf height, their influence waned as the game progressed. Ollie’s kicking from hand put the pack in the right part of the pitch and after a quarter of an hour, Ben powered through the middle of a ruck to score the opening try in front of the posts.

The Blues upped their game in the second half, spending long periods in opposition territory. Lloyd set the tone by reclaiming the kick off, snatching the ball in mid-air before the opposition pack could get to it. The second try came after an excellent penalty touch finder from Ollie, setting the lineout on the opposition’s 5 metre line. Scott’s throw picked out Dan, who set the pack around him to drive towards the line. The ball was smuggled back to Benji who touched down after the maul had marched its way over the try line. Another successful scrum launched the next scoring attack. Will collared his opposite number forcing the opposition to touch down in their own in goal area. The scrum was reset, Tom L’s short pass off the base followed by accurate hands down the back line gave Lloyd enough space to get round his opposite man and then run round towards the posts to score, making Ollie’s conversion that little but easier.
