Macclesfield Senior Colts 39 – 12 Stockport Senior Colts

Macclesfield Senior Colts kept their undefeated home record intact with a six try victory over local rivals Stockport. A first half hat trick from back row Benji Nicholls built a tidy lead by the break, along with a penalty conversion from Ollie Aston. Sean Hammond opened the scoring in the second half from close range, after Dan Sutton had claimed the ball at a lineout. Lloyd Smith -Coates brought up the thirty mark, racing clear to score under the posts after intercepting a pass on his own twenty two. Full back Ollie Aston had the last word, cutting a line between his opposing centres to dab down between the sticks after a sweet pass from his brother Harley. Ollie converted his own try to add to his previous two try and penalty conversions. Captain Cam McKay’s steely defence and judicious decision making singled him out for the Man of the Match award.

Macc capitalised on an early knock on by Stockport to spend the first five minutes of the game camped in the opposition’s twenty two. A series of pick and goes by the pack brought the ball closer to the line. Benji then got at the back of a maul that marched over the whitewash before grounding the ball for the try. Some lax tackling let in the Stockport centre for a score some two minutes later, which gave Macc the incentive for Ollie to kick a penalty to regain the lead. Benji’s second came after Dan Sutton stole the ball at the lineout. The pack drove the maul to outside the Stockport twenty two, then Benji broke off the back to scamper down the blind side wing to score his second. Benji wrapped up his hat trick with the help of James Cross. After a quick tap penalty ten metres out, Crossy drove Benji over the line for the last score of the half.

An early break by George Hodkinson, followed by a cutely weighted grubber kick by Cam, set Will up to tackle his man in the in goal area to win head and ball at a five yard scrum. Scrum half Tom Bamberger wrong footed his opposite number but got held up on the line. As the ball is recycled, Sean rumbled round the fringe of the ruck to score. Lloyd’s try came at an opportune moment. Macc were enduring a period of pressure from the opposition, when Lloyd snaffled a pass on his twenty two, then raced clear to score under the posts at the other end. The final try came after a period of pressure from the forwards down the left wing. The ball was moved right to Harley who span a pass out to his brother Ollie. The pace and angle of the pass enabled Ollie to cut a line between the two centres, then scoot through unopposed to splash down for the score.
