Wirral Senior Colts 27 – 19 Macclesfield Senior Colts

Macclesfield Senior Colts second half revival had Wirral on the back foot in their opening match of this season’s Cheshire Cup campaign. Full time came before the Blues could haul back Wirral’s first half lead, leaving them nine points short of the victory. James Brocklehurst’s back row performance caught the eye, tackling fiercely, popping up all over the pitch to make yards with ball in hand.

The first half was memorable only for the leaky defence as Wirral scored twenty two unanswered points. Harry had a promising dart down the left wing, Jonny harried well to force a knock on and Brocky was up quick to tackle his man. The second half was a different kettle of fish. The Blues won it 19-5 against a side 13 places and two leagues above them. Macc started straight from the kick off. Crossy and Ben smashed into the receiver, driving him back and regaining possession. Sean had a pick and go, but was stopped short, then Smiler burrowed over from close range to get the Blues on the scoreboard. Ollie converted the extras, before his team reset, ready to go again. Crossy set up the next try, again making ground from first receiver from a free kick. Sean picked the ball up and found little resistance as he went round the maul and under the posts for the second score, making Ollie’s conversion a formality.

A quick tap penalty saw Macc run the ball into the opposition’s twenty two from in front of their own try line, catching out a narrow Wirral defence. With the territory gained, another quickly taken free kick caught the Wirral defence on their heels. The ball was moved through the back’s hands to Tom B who got round his man to score in the right hand corner. Wirral’s nerves were rattled, but they competed well to close out the game, leaving Macc ruing their imperfect defence in the first half.
