Liverpool St Helens Colts 5 – 17 Macclesfield Senior Colts

A late hat trick from Macclesfield Senior Colts snatched a victory away from Liverpool St Helens in a game which looked like it was heading for a draw until the last quarter of an hour. The teams turned round scoreless at half time. Jonny Thompson was at the centre of the action in all that Macc had to show in the first half.  Jonny’s break off the back of a maul set up a sweeping back’s move to the opposite wing, which unfortunately petered out 10 metres short of the opposition try line.  Jonny’s second charge down the left wing got to within sniffing distance of the line before the cover defence got across. Crossy was in support and tried to burrow over, but the Saint’s defence held strong.

Four minutes into the second half, the Blues conceded a try in the corner, after their defence got too narrow around the breakdown. Ollie stopped another certain try with a classy tackle  of a Saint’s breakaway runner, who had eluded all other defenders and was gaining momentum down the right wing. The Blues took their time to regain some composure, Ben and George combined to gain some territory, along with Man of the Match Tom Bamberger’s box kicking and sniping around the base of the scrum gaining valuable possession.

The equaliser finally came after Crossy tapped a quick penalty, the ball was recycled smartly to Tom L who popped a ball to Lloyd, who powered over for the try from midfield. Lloyd used his power and pace to score his second try with less than five minutes to go. Scott hooked one against the head, Tom L moved the ball down the narrow side, linking with Lloyd who bust through three tackles to score in the corner. Lloyd’s hat trick was completed with the last play of the game. Lloyd hacked through a dropped pass with sufficient control  to gather it over the line for the score. Ollie’s conversion was the last action of the game.

You know you're in trouble when you see a wall of green shrits running towards you 😳 @connachtrugby work the ball across the line excellently once again, Conor Oliver and Jarrad Butler have a little one-two and make it look oh so easy 😌 #HeinekenChampionsCup

All the best to @ospreys' Sam Cross who's stretchered off after he seemed to twist his knee falling through a ruck. Hopefully a speedy recovery 🙏 #HeinekenChampionsCup
