Macclesfield Senior Colts 17 – 3 Widnes Senior Colts

Macclesfield Senior Colts inflicted the first defeat of the season on table toppers Widnes in a fiercely competitive match at Priory Park. The victory was built on committed defence and a powerful driving maul. Jonny Thompson put in a non stop performance at number eight, getting the coaches’ call as Man of the Match from a large pool of contenders. His quick thinking set up the second try and he scored one of his own mid way through the second half.

Macclesfield came out of the blocks quickly. Lloyd returned the kick off with a kick of his own, Brockie chased it down and nearly got clear along the left flank, until the Widnes cover got across. Dan’s mastery of the lineout spoiled the opposition’s ball and proved an effective weapon on Macclesfield’s own throw. Hooker Scott hit his man for the catch and drive ten metres out from the Widnes line. The pack steered the ball over the whitewash, Dan Goltman getting up last having grounded the ball for the first score. Macc kept up the pressure as the half came to an end. A good nudge from Tom found space behind the winger and fullback, bouncing once before finding touch. Jonny and Cam combined through the middle, each breaking tackles as they made the hard yards.

The second half is less than five minutes old when the Blues notch up another score. Jonny quickly tapped  a penalty, slipping the ball to Crossy three metres out. Crossy powered over from  close range to move the Blues into double figures. Cam slotted a difficult conversion for the extra two points.  The final try was a repeat of an earlier scoring move. A catch and drive from a lineout proved irresistible , this time Jonny steered the ball from the back of the maul, then smashed over the line for the try.

Macc kept Widnes at bay for the remaining quarter of an hour. Tom L won a foot race to a chip through, beating the winger to the touchdown to claim a twenty two dropout. As last man, Ollie tackled the breakaway centre to snuff out another attack, as did Brockie with a fine cover tackle minutes later. The final whistle came with the score an exact reverse of the away fixture at Widnes earlier in the season.
