We Looked World Beaters

Director of Rugby Geoff Wappett was fairly pleased with Macclesfield’s 59-5 bonus point win in what was his final game at Priory Park/ The Blues won to maintain top spot and keep the pressure up on the chasing pack.

59-5 and another bonus point, what did you make of the performance?

For most of the game, we played pretty well. In the last two or three weeks we have had the bonus point secured pretty quickly. This tends to take the edge off the game slightly, we executed very well early on, and we looked world beaters. But we then had 20 minutes where we were very ordinary and they got a score which kick started us back into action. We had the bonus point secured before half time so the game is effectively won. However, I thought we played quite well in the second half. I thought the young players that came on and played well. Josh Degroot came off the bench and played extremely well, he was physical and tackled well. Chris jones also impressed. Sam Rodman filled in for Billy Robinson at tight head and dominated the scrimmage throughout the game. Heffernan came on from the bench for Tom Mantell and also had a very good game. Ed Stobart is unavailable next week so Louis Taylor came on and had the opportunity to settle with the team, scored two tries, looked lively and will be starting next week. I thought Brierley wasn’t at his best last week but he came back and was tremendous today, all in all a lot of good things happened today. Against a side that haven’t been well beaten a lot this season apart from against us, which is good to see.

Was the scrum somewhere you looked to target? We turned over a lot of their ball and looked very dominant.

I am a big believer in getting your set pieces really dominant. Your set piece has to be good to allow you to play, if your set piece isn’t good the opposition can do to you whatever they choose. So we put big effort into scrummage and line out with a lot of plans to score points from the back of these. It was good to see Rodman so dominant after Billy has been tight head all season.

Stourbridge and Darlington both picked up bonus point wins, is it back to where we started before kick off?

Yes. I didn’t expect anything different really. I’m not that concerned what they do. We just have to get five points ourselves; it doesn’t make any difference, unless they lose. Both look to be stuttering with their results today, but it doesn’t matter as long as we keep winning and go to Darlington and do the same.

It was your last home game in charge today, how did it feel?

I’ve enjoyed my time here, it was a pleasant afternoon. The result was good so I leave the place with very fond memories.

Two games left, will it be icing on the cake if Macclesfield go up as champions?

I’ve won this league twice before. I know how to win this league, if we keep playing like we are, we’ll be alright. We must contain our composure, and there is nothing that has happened this season to suggest there should be an upset next week, but stranger things have happened in sport.
