Blues Head Coach Giles Heagerty, spoke very positively after his side’s defeat in their opening fixture of the season against Richmond, who travelled up to Macclesfield from the home of rugby, Twickenham.
Giles was obviously disappointed with losing the first game of the season at Priory Park but felt there were plenty of positives to take from a good performance from the Blues.
“I’m disappointed as anyone would be after a loss, whether it’s the first game of the season or not. But we have to take positives. We stayed in the game with some beautiful tries. I think we maybe just lacked a little bit of belief and I’ve told the boys that. We probably deserved at least one more try from the chances we created. But we can take plenty from that game with good heart. Let’s not forget that Richmond are a very good side. You only have to look at the way they physically shape; they have some good players and very good staff. It was always going to be a tricky start but we played some really good rugby.”
Winger, Josh Fowles is beginning his second spell at the club and opened his account with a brace, the Head Coach was obviously very pleased with his performance.
“Fowles is a class act, you know exactly what he’s going to bring and that second try that he scored showed a high level of class. I’m glad he saw sense and returned to Macclesfield. We’ve got some really good players, we just need to make sure we take our chances when they come.”
“I’m happy with the start and this will stand us in good stead going into the rest of the season.”
