Getting to Know The Blues

After long a long injury lay off, Macclesfield welcomed back a familiar face last week in Franky Barker who filled the number 8 shirt and was chosen as the chairman’s man of the match.

Franky faced a tough spell on the side-lines and trying to get back to match fitness, but he finally got there and is as strong as ever as a weapon in the Macclesfield Blues arsenal.

After a long layoff last year through injury how good was it to start the first league game of the season at Priory Park?

10 months is a long time to be out of the game and it was such a relief to get back on the field – I have worked very hard over the last few months and managed a couple of games for the 2s last week. There is no substitute for match fitness and I can feel myself gradually getting back to where I need to be.

 Any hidden talents?

I can hold and eat a banana with my feet!

 Any phobias?

No real phobias but I can’t stand mustard or wasabi!

Biggest joker at the club?

Dave Marwick used to be quite funny but now he’s part of the coaching staff so has dried up a bit

 Have you got any nicknames?

A lot of the lads coined the nickname “Phoenix” due to my ability to come back from injuries –  Geoff used to call me the Dominator last year but other than that, just Franky is good.

Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with?

Scarlett Johansson

Any Hobbies away from rugby?

I recently tried wakeboarding and found that to be great fun and challenging. I pick up my guitar whenever I’m injured and love to have a good sing along with a few drinks – I also love going to new places and experiencing new things – I played seasons in Spain and In Australia when I was younger, rugby is a great vehicle to see the world.

Three people you would like to invite to dinner.

I love Hugh Laurie as an actor and he performs with a Jazz band in which he’s a great showman, so he would be a welcome addition. I’d invite Warren Buffett to get some advice on shares and making some money. Shakira would be the third so I can practice my Spanish – She could also sing for us!

Who would play you in a film?

Luke Evans, who plays Bard the Bowman in the Hobbit or if he’s not available, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Favourite band/song and film

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Sherry and the Jersey Boys Film – They have been covered so many times and the show is a real education in music! I also love the story line of the Talented Mr. Ripley.

Proudest/best rugby moment?

Winning the Sedbergh 10s then Captaining an unbeaten 1st XV season at King’s Macc.

Two things you would put in room 101

1. Anti-social media – When people are rudely glued to their phone at the table.

2. Reality TV shows – I do not see the attraction in watching other people’s trivialities.

Your karaoke song?

I’ve been everywhere man – Johnny Cash

Describe Macc rugby club in three words.

Big Bad Blues.

Only one result to 'round up' today, but it's a crucial 5 points for the 1st XV, who are now top of the table after Rossendale lost over at Stockport. Here Tommy Taylor (Defence Coach) gives his views on the match. The lads now head into a well-deserved break, and face Blackburn up at Ramsgreave Drive in a fortnight. Next weekend it’s all the Guinness Men's Six Nations action on the screens down at Priory Park. 🍻 🏉 tinyurl.com/MRUTV ... See MoreSee Less
