Macclesfield Colts 12 – 0 Kirkby Lonsdale Colts

Macclesfield Colts started the new season with a straight forward win over Kirkby Lonsdale Colts. Continuity suffered as the newly assembled squad got to know each other, but the Blues had the bulk of the posession and territory and were seldom troubled in defence. The line out and scrum went very well, securing possession regardless of who put in. Rucking and mauling was on a par with their opponents. The flow of the game was disrupted by the whistle, thwarting either sides attempts at running rugby, but the Blues kept their concentration and were patient in attack. Matt Price was acclaimed as Man of the Match after his fiesty performance at Number 8.

The Blues kept the opposition in their own half for the majority of the game. An early penalty kick at the posts had failed to get the scoreboard ticking, but a catch and drive from a lineout saw George Hodkinson burst through the resultant maul to scamper under the posts for the opening score. Ollie Aston converted the extras. The embryonic centre partnership of Charlie Davies and Mike Green made a couple of breaks, Charlie showing off his defensive capabilities and Mike displaying some pace when he could get free. Wingers Jacko and Aled made yards, Jacko putting in a fine defensive tackle to prevent a breakaway from his opposite man. Playing down the hill in the second half, the Blues pinned the opposition back. Good scramble defence foiled an interception break away, and with the pack turning over ball, the Blues maintained their territorial advantage. It took until the 31st minute to break down the Kirkby defence for the second time. Possession had been lost, then regained in the middle of the park, Harry and Lewis P linked with George, who galloped down the right wing. Covering the wing position, Dougie found himself in possession , then bounced off a few tackles, finally managing to squirm over the line for the try.

There are a few things to work on in training in midweek, but a the lads have had a positive start to the season with an away victory.
