Macclesfield Colts 15 – 31 Orrell

Macclesfield Colts’ improved second half performance wasn’t enough to claw back a sixteen point deficit surrendered in the first half in a gritty game away at Orrell. Aled Williams’ industry on the wing collected him the Man of the Match award after a busy afternoon in defence and attack. Ollie Aston’s penalty was the solitary first half score for the Blues. Mike Green’s try in the 12th minute of the second half gave the Blues some hope, followed by George Hodkinson’s solo score after spoiling an opposition lineout. Ultimately, playing short of fifteen men took its toll on the Blues’ resolve as Orrell ran in two late tries to seal their victory.

The two sides matched up evenly for the first twenty minutes of the game. The Blues’ counter rucking won back possession on a number of occasions. Aled had a couple of forays down his wing with ball in hand and chasing down kicks ahead. Mike made inroads down the opposition wing after Tom and Charlie had put him into space. Rob and George were busy in defence, George spoiling the opposition lineout and Rob winning back possession by wrapping up the ball in the maul. The second twenty saw Orrell make the most of three overlaps, scoring in both corners with Ollie’s penalty conversion the only reply for the Blues.

The Blues ended up drawing the second half with a much better performance. Callum’s tackle on the Orrell centre saved a certain score under the posts. Ollie and Aled got close to the tryline in the left hand corner after George had broken through the opposition line out and the ball was shifted through the backs’ hands. The backs were more clinical with the next overlap, Mike scoring in the right hand corner after Ollie had come into the line. George scored the final try, stealing possession after Orrell had fumbled their own lineout. George ran through the last tackle to touch down.
