Macclesfield Colts 17 – 36 Anselmians

Macclesfield Colts encountered top of the table Anselmians at Priory Park, performing well in patches, but eventually losing out six tries to three. Two tries from Man of the Match Ben Hadfield and an Ollie Aston conversion got the Blues to within five points at half time. Aled Williams try was the only reply in the second half for the home side, after he won a foot race to the ball for the second time in two weeks , to score a handy try in the right hand corner.

The Blues didn’t start well, letting in two early tries down the right flank. Scott upped the performance level chasing down a kick to catch his opponent in possession and win the scrum and some field position at last. Anselmians infringed at the next breakdown, giving Ollie the chance to kick the penalty to the five yard line. Matt caught the ball at two in the lineout, then smuggled it back to Ben. The pack rumbled towards the line as Ben peeled off the back to touchdown. Tom caught his opposite man in possession to win a scrum, firstly in their twenty two, then catching him in his own in goal area. From the five metre scrum, the pack started to probe the Anselmians defence. A quick tap from Harry, followed by a Stubbsy pick and go got close to the line. Ben then burrowed his way over for the try. Ollie converted the extras.

The Blues tried to pick up the pace in the second half. Josh was quick off the line to harass the opposition. Will had a couple of mazy runs from quick taps, and put in two useful kicks to the corner. Aled chased down one kick, beating the opposition winger to the touch down in the in- goal area for the Blues’ final score. Jacko’s monster tackle on a fast approaching flanker was the only highlight of the rest of the game as the Blues efforts petered out in the closing minutes of the game.
