Macclesfield Colts 18 – 20 Stockport Colts

The Colts were beaten by the last kick of the game in a tight encounter against local rivals Stockport. Bouncing back from conceding a try in the first minute, the Blues turned round at half time 10 -5 in front. Matt scored the first try, cutting inside from a pass from Mike after the backs had shifted the ball down the line, following some straight running from Ben. Ollie secured the extra two points with a well judged conversion from wide out. George’s straight running gave the Blues momentum until he had to retire with concussion after a heavy tackle. Will pressed and harried his opposite man in defence, giving him little room to manoeuvre and forcing the knock on. Ollie’s penalty conversion was the other score in the half after the opposition had infringed at the breakdown.

Now playing up the hill, the Blues extended their lead with another Ollie penalty, after Stockport had entered a ruck illegally. Two minutes later, the Blues were back on the scoreboard again. Tom spotted space behind the Stockport back line and kicked ahead. Aled won the chase to the touchdown just as the ball rolled into the in goal area, beating the defence and Tom’s dive for the score. Stockport them clawed their way back into the game with two tries, despite some desperate defence by the Blues on their own line. Jacko’s covering tackle prevented a certain score, as he raced across the pitch from the opposite wing to stop the attacker in his tracks. With the clock on 38 minutes, and one point in it, Macclesfield were caught offside just outside their twenty two. With no time for a lineout, Stockport went for the penalty shot at goal. The ball hit the crossbar and fell the wrong side for the Blues.

Nobody could be singled out as Man of the Match due to committed performances by the whole squad. However, there are lessons to be learnt about how to close out a tight game.
