Macclesfield Colts 28 – 14 Bolton Colts

Macclesfield Colts started 2015 with an away win, sealing their first double of the season against Bolton. Joe Stubbs’ tireless performance in the pack collected the Man of the Match award, outshining Captain George Hodkinson’s hat trick of tries. Charlie Davies’ mazy solo run in the second half sealed the victory with a try under the posts. Tom Leicester and Ollie Aston shared the conversions, each with a 100% success rate, both slotting a difficult kick from out wide.

Man of the Match – Joe Stubbs

The Blues started well from the kick off, Callum harried the ball receiver into a knock on, setting up a scrum deep in the Bolton twenty two. Dougie got over the line, but was deemed to be held up. Dougie had another go from a tap penalty, setting the ball for skipper George Hodkinson to crash over for the first score. Tom converted from wide out in the 5 metre channel. George made a break from the back of a lineout, supported by Callum, then Joe to set up field position in the opposition twenty two. A flicked inside pass behind his back from Tom to George set up the second try. George beat the cover defence to score under the posts. Charlie scored his try early in the second half, making the most of a botched backs’ move, shrugging off some early tackles to find some space on the edge of the twenty two. A sway of the hips sent the last defender the wrong way, giving Charlie a clear run under the posts. George sealed his hat trick after a catch and drive from a well-executed lineout, following Ollie’s probing penalty touch finder. Matt collected the ball from Elliot’s throw, shifting it to George at the back of the maul. George peeled off the back to score down the narrow side. Ollie slotted the tricky conversion from the 5 metre channel. Mike got over the line a few minutes later after the forwards had been probing the defence, but was unsighted by the referee, so the score could not be given.
