From The Chair 23

Unsurprisingly, all home matches were called off on Saturday & Sunday due to Priory Park being under a 4″ covering of snow, which looked really pretty but made any kind of rugby impossible.  Once the snow and ice have melted, the pitches are going to be waterlogged and muddy with the volunteer groundsmen having their work cut out to make the pitches playable over the next few weeks. Please be supportive of their efforts and respect any decisions made regarding not using pitches (not taken lightly) made by them.

Which brings me onto another subject……………., specifically, the lack of RFU Raffle Tickets being sold to raise money to improve the pitches and astro turf.  To date, 7% of tickets have been sold, 7%!!……….and the majority of those have been sold by VP`s, not players or parents who will benefit from the improved pitches.

We need you to start selling your allocation of tickets…………….don`t come complaining to Management over the state of the pitches unless you have sold your entire allocation………and pushed your team mates, friends, colleagues into selling theirs as well

You should, by now have received the RFU raffle tickets for EACH AND EVERY MEMBER TO SELL – If you haven`t received yours, please contact Bev in the office –  90% of the takings – potentially £9,000!!! – goes to the club and ALL MONEY raised will be allocated to a specific project to improve the facilities at the club NOT TOWARDS PLAYERS WAGES as is a popular misconception.

We are in desperate need of funds to prolong the life of the astro turf in order that it can keep producing much needed income for the club. The newly laid pitches require better drainage and care. To repair the astro turf and upgrade the playing pitches will cost in the region of £6,000…………… We average around £3,000 each year in ticket sales, (which means only 1 in 3 of our members are pulling their weight) and need twice that to carry out these essential works. Please ensure you sell your allocation as you can see how desperate we are.

Row to Twickenham for the World Cup Final

The final of the 2015 rugby world cup will take place on 31st October this year. A team from Macclesfield Rugby Club is going to row the distance from the club to the stadium finishing an hour before kick-off to raise money for the club and for East Cheshire Hospice.

Are you interested in taking part?

What is planned?

  • It’s exactly 305 km (305,000 mtrs) from Priory Park to the gates of Twickenham.
  • We will put together a team to row the distance on static rowing machines, beginning in the afternoon of 30th October and finishing just before kick-off of the final on Saturday 31st.
  • We will seek sponsorship from local companies and from individuals to raise money for East Cheshire Hospice and for priority projects for the club (including improving disabled access, improving the drainage on the new pitch and improving the ladies’ toilets)

What do we need?

  • A team of 10 rowers (ideally of mixed age and sex) prepared to commit to the training over the coming months, to complete the weekend event, and to raise sponsorship money.
  • Support staff:
  • A physiotherapist to support the rowers over the actual event weekend.
  • A sponsorship manager to obtain sponsorship (either financial or in kind) from local organisations and to establish the necessary infrastructure for individuals to sponsor the team.
  • A logistics manager to organise all aspects of the event on the day and to provide communications to sponsors and members over the course of the year.

If you are interested what should you do?

  • Simply send your name, age and contact details and the role you would like to take, to Bev Roberts at the club at
  • If we get sufficient interest, we will contact you by the end of the month for a meeting to discuss the project in more detail.

It’s a fantastic way to get fit, an opportunity to be part of a team and to raise money for really good causes – apart from a stone or two, what have you got to lose?!

Already signed up are for rowing; Tim Peakman, MRUFC Secretary; Pete Harper – MRUFC Chairman; Charlie Harper – youngest Harper; Jonathan Marsh- Retail Sales Manager Halliwell Jones BMW Wilmslow.

2015 sees the Rugby World Cup held in England and the chance for everyone to get tbehind their team for this once in a generation occassion. MRUFC will be planning various events to celebrate, mark the event so please look out for further information to make the World Cup a memorable occassion
