Blaydon came away from Priory Park with a hard fought win thanks to their fly half Andrew Baggett. The stand-off scored a try and kicked five more points in a 7-10 away victory to bottom side Macclesfield.
Blaydon flew out of the traps and took the lead on six minutes, after putting some good phases of possession together in Blues territory Baggett spotted a chink in the defence and dived in under the posts, and converted the score himself.
The visitor’s early score seemed to fire the hosts into action as they went to dominate possession for a prolonged period of time. With Macc deep in Blaydon territory a moment of Jordan Brookes magic created a gap for number 8 Franky Barker to blast through and get the Macclesfield on the scoreboard, Tom Eaton converted the score.
The Blues kept up the pressure after their score all the way until half time and the far bigger Blaydon side on the ropes for the remainder of the first period, the visitor’s Blaydon would have been glad to hear the half time whistle and go In at seven points apiece.
Blaydon grabbed the decisive score three minutes into the second half, a Baggett penalty after a Macclesfield infringement at the scrum turned out to be the winning score. Blaydon went on to dominate second half proceedings but stern Blues defence ensured the hosts stayed in the game and went close on a couple of occasions late on.
