Richmond 66-41 The Blues

Macclesfield finished the season on Saturday away at Richmond as they more than played their part in a game that saw over 100 points scored with 16 tries as The Blues went down 66-41.

The hosts Richmond got the game off to a flying start as they scored the opening try with just four minutes gone, a line out deep in Blues territory resulted in a rolling maul crashing over the white wash.

The Blues answered back on eight minutes with a strong showing from the line out of their own, David Marwick the man to get himself over the line after the maul was stopped just short, Tom Morton added the conversion to bring the scores level.

On 12 minutes the home side re opened their seven point lead, winger Curtis Freeman picking up possession around the half way mark and finishing out wide, captain Rob Kirby again with the conversion.

The Blues again pulled Richmond back on 15 minutes, Rhodri Mayor providing an expert finish out wide, Morton missed the a tough conversion, 14-12.

Five minutes later the hosts again re-established their lead, this time from deep in their own half, Richmond absorbed Blues pressure and released winger Jordan Burns who’s electric pace saw him under the posts, 21-12.

On 25 minutes The Blues again had Richmond within their sights. A fantastic chip through from fly-half Tom Eaton was collect by Morton who ran in to finish and convert, 21-19.

The Blues again failed to keep Richmond out after getting back within touching distance as a penalty was given away and a rolling maul again charged over the line to open a nine point lead once again.

The Blues then responded again, this time through Josh Fowles. The winger picked up the ball from a Jordan Brookes offload but it was truly a team try as The Blues kept the ball alive through a number of tackles which created the open field for Fowles to finish under the posts.

Richmond again restored their lead just minutes later after a clever chip and chase was collected for the try scored and converted by Kirby, 35-26.

Tom Eaton kicked a penalty late in the first half to leave the score 35-29 at the half time whistle.

Richmond again started the quicker of the two sides, with three tries before the 50 minute mark, Burns scoring two of them to secure his hat-trick, 52-29.

Franky Barker pulled one back for The Blues, good work from the back ensured that Barker could touch down and Eaton converted.

The Blues momentum was short lived however, as on 60 minutes Chris Jones in his last match for Macc was sent to the bin and the hosts took full advantage as they once again drove over the line from a maul.

Tom Eaton was then sent to the sin bin on 68 minutes, and Richmond again took full advantage as the number 8 Chris Davies crashed over from close range.

With the full 15 back on the field Macc got a late consolation score through flanker Phil Williams which left the final score, 66-41.
