I want us to be the fittest in National 2

Macclesfield Rugby Club are certainly hard at it in pre-season so far, and fitness coach and new Director of Youth rugby has been very impressed with what he has seen from The Blues squad so far.

Jones has been running the sessions alongside head coach Giles Heagerty and admits that some of the sessions have been incredibly gruelling for the team but they have pulled through and look stronger for every week that passes.

“It’s really good, the lads have stuck at it and I’m really happy with where we are. It’s been horrible at times but they’ve have pulled through and part of it was to see what they had in the tank. But part was also a personal goal I set that I want us to be the fittest side in the league.”

“We get the usual moans and groans but its part and parcel of rugby at this level. Come the end of each session the lads are feeling positive and they’re improving with each and every session.”

The Blues return to rugby action in a pre-season game on August 15th against Nuneaton, and Jones felt that these fixtures are crucial to the development of the side going into the season, as no fitness training can replicate the live match action.

“This training is a really good starting block for us, but it’s difficult to replicate rugby fitness, and that’s why we’ve got the pre-season games lined up. So by the time it comes to Stourbridge on the 5th (September) we’ll be ready to fly out of the blocks.”

The Blues pre-season fixtures are as follows; Nuneaton, 15th August, Home, Northwich, 18th August, Home, Wilmslow, 25th August, Home, Wirral, Cheshire Cup, 29th August, Away.

Jones hopes this big pre-season effort from The Blues can lead into a successful season, with The Blues’ aims high for the year, Jones admitted it would be wrong to set anything but the highest goals.

“Our aim is promotion. It would be foolish to want anything else. We enjoyed national one, all be it not the best of seasons but we want to play at the best level we can and we will enable ourselves to do that by gaining promotion.”
