Over the 24 hours between noon on October 30th & noon 31st October (World Cup Final Day) ten intrepid members of Macclesfield Rugby Club will each row 30,000 meters in relay over 24 hrs. using a single rowing machine set up at the Rugby Club to raise money for your club and for the East Cheshire Hospice. The pace needed to achieve the challenge is 6,354 meters every 30 minutes.

pete-harper50% of all the money raised will be donated to the East Cheshire Hospice as part of our duty of care in the community and in recognition of the valuable work they do. 50% will go towards the purchase of kit and equipment needed by Macclesfield Rugby Club and to support the improvement of the Club’s facilities for the community.

The 24 hour challenge starts at Macclesfield Rugby Club at lunchtime on Friday 30th October 2015, with The Big Finish at lunchtime on Rugby World Cup Final Day, Saturday 31st October 2015.

Mike Finniemore`s men made it 6 wins in a row and 30 points from the last 30 available when they overcame a dogged and well organised Otley side at Macclesfield on Saturday.  Many of the Priory Park faithful were still taking their seats when Rhodri Mayor scored the first try of the afternoon within 30 seconds of the kick off, following some good work by fullback Charlie Venables.  Despite going in at half time behind on the scoreboard for the 2nd week running, the result was never really in any doubt as The Blues continued their rich vein of try scoring with tries by Dave Marwick (2), Rhodri Mayor (2) and Josh Fowles & Elliott Brierley with 1 apiece.  2nd row Dave Marwick is now The Blues leading try scorer this season with 7 from 7 games!  Think he`s after Parky`s record of 34 from a couple of seasons ago.  Make no mistake, The Blues had to work hard for this win and Otley put up some stern defence and were well organised in the tight, giving Macc a stern test.  Coaches Giles & CJ won`t be happy the defence again leaked tries and the offence blew some golden opportunities to score, but yet again, the Blues attacking intent was clear with for about the 5th game in succession, not a single penalty kick at goal was attempted.  I guess when you play with such intensity and speed, mistakes will be made and opportunities spurned, but it certainly makes for thrilling rugby!

12. Final try
Mazzer scoring his 7th (yes, 7!) of the season
9. Another run in
Rhodri rounds the Otley defence and wrongfoots the ref on his way to scoring
7. A simple touch down
Josh scoring, probably his easiest ever try
11. Wrong footing the defense
Reags doing his bit in the centre
2.Open play
Parky back to rampaging best
6. Another high tackle
Otley having to revert to high tackles to stop Parky
4. Number three
Rhodri denied a hat trick by a double movement
3. Open play 2
That man Mazzer again!
man of match 14-10-15
Deserving Man of the Match, Dave Marwick. AKA Mazzer

Next week sees The Blues travel to the beautiful surroundings of Luctonians in Herefordshire to take on the bottom placed side in the league, k.o. 3.00pm, where they will hoping to continue the run of victories at the ground where Macclesfield won a play off game back in 2003 to win promotion to The National Leagues for the first time.

The next 3 home games are going to be tough for the Blues, with all the visitors having great starts to the season and sitting in the top 5.  The next few weeks are season defining for The Blues with some proverbial “10 pointers” against top sides.

Our 1st visitors are newly promoted Sandal (Nov 7th) who have won 6 and lost 1 and beat table toppers Sedgley Park a couple of weeks ago, followed by Leicester Lions in 5th place (Nov 21st) and finally “Le Crunch” with old rivals and league leaders, Sedgley Park Tigers on Dec 5th.  We need your support for these vital matches, so put the dates in your diary, bring some mates and watch some bone crunching live sport at Priory Park.  Be part of the story!

The Lions exacted swift revenge on their only conquerors on Saturday when they travelled to Heywood Road for the 2nd time in 14 days and came back 67-7 winners over Sale. The 3rds had a great win over Liverpool Collegiate 58 – 22 but the 4ths and Colts both went down 0-11 at Eagle & 10-18 at Manchester respectively.

This week sees both The Lions & 3rds take on Preston Grasshoppers with The Lions at home & 3rds away, the 4ths entertain Holmes Chapel 1st XV.  All kick offs at 3.00pm.  Sunday sees the Colts travel to Chester, 2.00 k.o.

As you may be aware, we host ambitious Sale FC on Saturday 19th December and the match will be preceded by our ever popular Christmas Lunch.  As the Christmas lunch is always oversubscribed, with several members being disappointed, we have given some thought as to how we can try to ensure loyal supporters of the lunches are given priority.

With this in mind, and to be fair to everyone, we will be offering priority to those who attend one of the following lunches

Therefore, if you are planning on booking a place at The Christmas Lunch, please ensure you book a place for one of the following;

  • 7th November v. Sandal – Barry`s World Famous Pie Lunch at 1.30 – 2 courses for £10, plus entry
  • 21st November v. Leicester Lions – Formal Pre Match Lunch – 3 courses £15 + entry
  • December 5th  `Le Crunch` against fierce rivals and table toppers, SEDGLEY PARKBarry`s World Famous Pie Lunch at 1.30 – 2 courses for £10, plus entry

Why not get a table together with some pals and enjoy the `craic` before the big event??  Contact Bev in the office to reserve your place.

Macclesfield RUFC take on local rivals Sandbach in the semi final of the Cheshire Cup on Saturday October 31st with a 12.00 pm kick off (to be confirmed).  Sandbach play at;

Bradwall Road
CW11 1RA
Tel: 01270 762475
Why not come down to Priory Park in the morning to see how the rowers are doing (hand over some cash for the cause!) before heading over to Sandbach, returning home in time to watch the World Cup Final!

On Friday night 85 people took part in the annual Mini & Junior Quiz Night, as with tradition there were more prizes than people at the event so everyone won something and had some good old fashioned rugby club fun!

The winners on the night were Paul Jacko / Dom McCarthy / Simon Dempsey / Dougie, as you can see they didn’t cheat with their winning team of 5 ?????

Matt Harding hand selected team came 2nd.

The winning team (Eggheads next stop?)

A great night that raised over £1250 for the Mini & Junior teams

Thanks to Quiz Master Chris Hehirs, (who upset his wife by not letting Sue see any of the answers before the night !!) and Rob Oliver for organising the event.  Shows you that a great time can be had and money raised at the same time!
