End of an Era

It is with great sadness I have to announce that, for family reasons, Bill and Bev Roberts will be stepping down at Christmas from their respective roles with the rugby club. Bill has been associated with the rugby club since 1973, when I had the pleasure of playing with him, in the first Colts side at Macclesfield. Bill went on to grace the 1st XV for many seasons and since finishing his playing career, has filled just about every role through the various committees, culminating in being appointed as Club Chairman in the 1990`s. He took up his current administrative role some 20 years ago and was joined by Bev over 10 years ago.

It’s hard to overstate their commitment and contribution to the club and they have been a constant during a period of considerable change as rugby has embraced a professionalism that has affected the game profoundly at all levels. Bill and Bev have been friendly, efficient faces for anyone coming to the club – their office door is always open and the first thing many see is Bill or Bev feverishly sorting out some issue or engaged in conversation with club members. On a Saturday, Bev is glued to the computer managing the considerable administration burden ranging from gate receipts to team sheets whilst Bill will be outside sorting everything from touch flags to ball boys. What many people don’t see is the huge contribution they make during the week. Perhaps the best compliment we can pay them is that they are real rugby people in the old-fashioned sense.

It’s hard to imagine that we can replace them but we will require a highly talented and organised individual to fill such big shoes. We are carefully defining the job specification with Bill and Bev’s assistance and we will be advertising and interviewing in the New Year. This is such an important appointment that we will follow a formal and transparent process. In the interim we have been very fortunate that Jonathan Marsh will fill the gap until the new appointment. Jonathan is a long- standing club member with a proven track record in administration and sales and he will be working with Bill and Bev over the next few weeks to handover the processes and systems. Please give Jonathan every support and a little forbearance as we make the difficult transition.

It only remains for me to personally put on record my enormous thanks and appreciation of the efforts of these two club stalwarts. They will always be welcome at the club and we hope to see them on Saturdays when they can come and simply enjoy the game and hospitality. We will be recognising Bill and Bev formally but will make announcements on this in the New Year.

Peter Harper, Chairman.
