From The Chair 27

As part of our efforts to bring back some of those elements of a rugby club that have drifted a little over the years, we are going to commission a memorial board to recognise those members of the club who have died on active service in conflicts around the world.

We have already identified 12  members who were killed in the second world war (and as part of the club history initiative led by Bob Jenner have found out a lot about their service records and decorations) but we invite you to let us know of anyone who has been killed on active service since then. We would now like to extend that Roll of Honour to include former members who died while on active service in subsequent conflicts.

Clearly this is something that we will address sensitively. If you know of a former member who died whilst in service could you let us know about them and if there are surviving relatives so that we can obtain their consent. The first point of contact should be Bob Jenner ( or via the Club) in his role as lead of the club history.

Thank you for your help

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the passing of Alan Johnson last Saturday.  Alan was `part of the furniture` at Macclesfield Rugby Club for many, many years, a familiar face on the touchline, in the bar and in the Committee rooms, and served the club in just about every capacity including Secretary, Chairman (on 2 occasions) and President, and was deservedly made an Honorary Life member a few years ago. Alan also served the County of Cheshire for many seasons and was a well-known and respected face, in every rugby club in the North of England.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, and our thoughts go out to Alan`s Family, Daughters Denise & Paula.   I will advise of Alan`s funeral arrangements once they are finalised.  In the meantime, all 8 teams playing at Priory Park this Saturday, will observe a minutes silence in memory of Alan.

Following last weeks stuttering performance at Priory Park, The Blues put in a solid display against a Sandal team with a very good home record,  scoring 5 tries and bagging 5 League points to increase the lead at the top of table to 15 points.

Tries by Marshall Gadd (from 43 metres out!?!), Ryan Parkinson, Josh Fowles,  Rhodri Mayor & Matt King with 3 conversions from Lewis Barker, backed up with a tremendous defensive effort, secured a comfortable win for The Blues.  The only downside was a hamstring injury to in form fullback Charlie Venables, which hopefully, isn`t too serious.

Next up for The Blues is the rearranged home game this Saturday against Broadstreet, followed the following week by another home match, with Harrogate being the visitors to Priory Park.

February 27th  v. Broadstreet at Priory Park – 2 course Lunch £10 plus entry*

March 5th v. Harrogate at Priory Park – 2 course Lunch £10 plus entry*

March 12th v. Preston Away

March 19th v. Leicester Lions Away

March 26th v. Otley Away

April 2nd v. Huddersfield at Priory Park

9th April v. Sedgley Park Away – Supporters Coach*

16th April v. Chester at Priory Park

23rd April v. Sale Away – Supporters Coach*

30th April v. Stourbridge at Priory Park – 2 course Lunch £10 plus entry*

Please Note; We now have 2 Home games on successive Saturdays (Feb 27th & March 5th) followed by 3 away games on the trot.  Please try to make it to the home games (in bold type) to see The Blues in action.

Following the departure of Bill and Bev Roberts, we are in urgent need of a pool of volunteers to assist with the set-up on match days.  Those attending and assisting will get free entry to the match for themselves and one other adult (kids come free of course).  The jobs are not hard (would take around 30 minutes), and it needs around 4 or 5 people each week.  If we have a pool of 25 or so willing volunteers, that would mean each person has to do only 4 matches per season (that breaks down to donating 2 hours to your rugby club per season).

Of course, many of you already go above and beyond; coaching the kids, admin for age groups and the myriad of other roles.  However we really do need some people to step up and I am suggesting this might be people NOT currently involved in the running of the club – sharing the load fairly through the club .

The tasks are not complex.

  • Raising the flags up the pole (one person – 10 minutes)
  • Opening the score board (one person – 15 minutes)
  • Switching on the score board and floodlights (2 minutes)
  • Putting out the pitch marker posts (two people – 20 minutes)
  • Then at the end of the match, doing the same in reverse.  .

If you are willing to give up a small portion of time to help YOUR CLUB, please contact Jonathan Marsh (Business Director) on or 07841 114894

If you want a chat about the various jobs please give Phil Mason (Youth Section Manager) a shout ( or 07738 727638)

Traditionally, Macc. Veterans have always done the collection for the Marie Curie Cancer Support in March, and this year is no exception – other than if you`re not a Vet. but would like to join the band of Merry Men, please feel free to join in!

“Hi Vets,

It’s that time of year again folks!  We have again been asked to don our Vets shirts and rattle some collecting tins/goblets for the traditional Marie Curie ‘Daffodil Collection’ in Macclesfield town centre on Saturday 5th March.  If you can lend a hand by doing a one or two hour stint in the morning (let’s say any time from 9.30 until 2.00), please let me know, with your preferred slots, as soon as you can.  More details of the day’s arrangements will be supplied in due course.

I’m not very strict about the definition of a Vet so all family and friends welcome.

Thanks, in anticipation,”

Only one result to 'round up' today, but it's a crucial 5 points for the 1st XV, who are now top of the table after Rossendale lost over at Stockport. Here Tommy Taylor (Defence Coach) gives his views on the match. The lads now head into a well-deserved break, and face Blackburn up at Ramsgreave Drive in a fortnight. Next weekend it’s all the Guinness Men's Six Nations action on the screens down at Priory Park. 🍻 🏉 ... See MoreSee Less
