From The Chair 28

On Saturday, The Blues returned to Priory Park to host a Broadstreet side who make a mockery of their lowly league position, and came out on top in a very tight game by 15-3 ………..quite a contrast to the free flowing 90 point thriller we witnessed back in September at Broadstreet.  I`m sure Giles and the coaching staff will be keen to iron out a few things before this Saturdays home game against a very dangerous Harrogate side. One major plus on Saturday, was the performance of flanker Joe Palmer who put in a Man of the Match performance in his first start for The Blues………..well played Joe – great game!

This Saturday, The Blues are again at Priory Park for the visit of Harrogate, in what will a severe test for the Macc Lads – Harrogate are a very well organised side, capable of beating anyone on the day.  This is The Blues last game at Priory Park until the start of April, so make sure you get down to support the team in their efforts to return to National League 1.  There are still places available for the pre match lunch at the bargain price of £10 plus entry.

Menu is an enticing “Roasted red pepper and tomato soup, Roast chicken breast , Boulanger potatoes, green beans with shallots, carrot batons, home made gravy.”  Book with;

Last Saturday saw The Lions beat Lymm convincingly 69-0, the 3rds came unstuck against a strong Warrington 2nd team and lost 18-56 and Lymm 4ths cried off Saturday morning leaving our 4ths with no game.  Sunday saw the Colts go down 8-48 at Manchester.

This weekend The Lions go to Caldy, 3rds are away at Broughton Park and the 4ths travel to darkest Shropshire to take on Oswestery 2nds. All kick offs 2.15. Sunday sees the Colts at Priory Park v. Fylde at 2.00.

As you can see, there are only 3 home games left after this Saturday, so make sure you get down to Priory Park to watch the Macc Lads push for promotion – be there, be part of it!

I have to announce the passing of Dave Allen who we lost last Friday night following a long illness.  Dave joined the club comparatively late in life, and was an integral part of the Veterans “family” for many happy years, where he enjoyed the social side of rugby and all that went with it. Dave was latterly a member of the Macclesfield Male Voice Choir, fulfilling his desire to sing & socialise.  Our thoughts go out to Joan and the rest of the Allen family.

Dave`s funeral will be held at Macclesfield  Crematorium on Wed 9th March at 1.20pm & then onto Sutton Hall.

Alan Johnson`s funeral service will be held on Thursday March 10th at St. James` Parish Church, Gawsworth at 12.30, followed by cremation at Macclesfield Crematorium at 1.20. These services will be followed by refreshments and a celebration of Alan`s life, to be held at Priory Park.  Daughters Denise & Paula have indicated that all are welcome at each venue.

As part of our efforts to bring back some of those elements of a rugby club that have drifted a little over the years, we are going to commission a memorial board to recognise those members of the club who have died on active service in conflicts around the world.

We have already identified 12  members who were killed in the second world war (and as part of the club history initiative led by Bob Jenner have found out a lot about their service records and decorations) but we invite you to let us know of anyone who has been killed on active service since then. We would now like to extend that Roll of Honour to include former members who died while on active service in subsequent conflicts.

Clearly this is something that we will address sensitively. If you know of a former member who died whilst in service could you let us know about them and if there are surviving relatives so that we can obtain their consent. The first point of contact should be Bob Jenner ( or via the Club) in his role as lead of the club history.

Thank you for your help.

As you may know, Jonathan Marsh agreed to take on this role on an interim basis for 3 months, starting on January 1st.  With 1 month left on this agreement, we would invite anyone interested in the position, to send in a CV to me at in order that we can draw up a shortlist to interview within the next 2 weeks.
