Loughborough Students 76-30 Blues

The Blues were hammered 76-30 away at Loughborough Students. Looking to build from last weeks victory over DMP, The Blues were humbled as they shipped 11 tries. Despite this, Macc left with a point, scoring five tries themselves.

The hosts got off to an electric start, pinning Macc inside their own 22. Loughborough then took the lead in the second minute, going over in the corner. However, Macc started to build some pressure of their own. This was rewarded when Elliott Millar-Mills rampaged over to level the scores. The hosts hit back immediately, after The Blues put themselves under unnecessary pressure, failing to clear from the kick-off. Eaton then added a penalty for Macc, to close the gap to 12-8 at the 20 minute mark. Loughborough scored their third try of the match minutes later after a slick backs move.

Macc then returned the favour, producing their own slick hands to send Sam Broster over in the corner. The host scored a penalty to take the score to 22-13 with 10 remaining in the half. Loughborough secured the bonus point on 35 minutes after sloppy handling from Macc allowed them in. Macc then surrendered a fifth try failing to deal with a kick chase. Loughborough then ran the length of the pitch to score their sixth try of the half. However Macc had the last score of the half after Tom Mantell drove over from a maul to make the half time score 43-20

Macc started the brighter of the two teams and the pressure showed as Sam Broster scored his second of the match. However from this point on the floodgates opened as the hosts ran in try after try as the Blues’ heads dropped. The first two tries came from poor Macclesfield defending. The rest came from clinical attacking play from the hosts, converting routine two on ones and executing a phenomenal lineout move. However Macc would have the last score of the game as Tom Mantell drove over from a maul.

The Blues will need to put this result behind them as they host second-placed Birmingham Mosley at Priory Park next weekend.

Only one result to 'round up' today, but it's a crucial 5 points for the 1st XV, who are now top of the table after Rossendale lost over at Stockport. Here Tommy Taylor (Defence Coach) gives his views on the match. The lads now head into a well-deserved break, and face Blackburn up at Ramsgreave Drive in a fortnight.
