Rugby Notes from ‘Clubman’

Overall another bleak weekend for Macclesfield Rugby Club with just two games played on Saturday with the Senior Squad going down in a Barbarians style game at Priory Park to Sheffield Tigers in a tryfest by 45-55 with no fewer than fifteen tries scored seven of which came from the Blues with an outstanding ‘hat trick’ from Sam Parry but the game was marred by a serious leg injury to Blues Captain Max Smith which stopped play for a lengthy spell but credit to Referee Michael Harris who blew up instantly to stop play and the players from Sheffield and Macc who gave assistance to him on the field until he went to Casualty. – read more >>

Albert Simpson

As previously mentioned, Albert will be stepping down from his post as Referees Contact at the end of this season after many years of sterling service. We are currently searching for a suitable successor to fill his boots. Please read the job description below and if this is something you would like to take on, contact the office in the first instance –

  • Post 2nd/3rd team  Home fixtures as notified by North West Intermediate League’s website onto MDRURS website
  • Post Colts Home Fixtures from Raging Bull Colts League website onto MDRURS website

You will need to be listed as Club Contact (mobile and landline telephone numbers only) with MDRURS in their Handbook which you will receive and which lists all officials’ and referees’ details (mobile, landline telephone numbers and postcode only). You will have to be authorised by MDRURS before posting on their website.

  • Double-check weekly Home appointments on MDRURS website with Home fixtures on MRUFC website
  • Notify referees by email accordingly for Home appointments with opponents/colours of strip/date&time of kick-off and directions to ground – see attachments
  • Notify by email MRUFC Officials (Managers/Captains/JohnWebster/JonathanMarsh) – see attachment
  • Notify by email Colts referee and Colts manager with, in addition, as above plus mobile numbers – see attachment
  • Referees’ contact is usually made by email on a Tuesday. However, it is usual to monitor MDRURS website daily for changes of referees and action accordingly
  • Be aware of Cup appointments and additional fixtures for Colts which are not known at the start of the season
  • If attending games refereed by MDRURS referees, introduce yourself.

Club Maintenance

We are always striving to keep the club at an acceptable standard but there are many constraints, manpower and money are the two biggest issues. If you notice something that is in need of repair please contact the office, we cannot guarantee that the work will be completed quickly or even at all, but at least we are aware of the problem and a decision will be made about effecting a repair.

As an alternative, if you spot a problem and you can fix it (safely) please do so, or if you know of someone that could repair it please ask them to do so. An excellent example of this occurred a few weeks ago whist the U14s were training one evening, Paul Underhill reported that posts had collapsed on the smaller back pitch. Before our regular groundsmen had a chance to lift them back into place, Carl Downes, with the help of Cheshire Demolition had not only returned the posts to the original position but he had also welded to joints! This type of help from members is always appreciated.

Lost Property

We are gathering quite a collection of lost property at the club, jackets, boots, shirts, keys. It will be kept until the end of the season. If you are missing something please contact the club.

We still have quite a few who yet to pay their playing subscriptions.

  • Senior Players – 45
  • Colts – 16
  • Mini & Junior section – 41

From 1st October, those that have not paid their subs will not be eligible for selection. There will be no flexibility on this ruling.

RFU Raffle

The RFU raffle is just around the corner, please put some money aside to pay for your tickets. This year every member will receive just two books (10 tickets), more will be available if required.

The raffle is a tremendous way of raising money for your club, we retain 90% of all funds raised as a tax free donation. The RFU society keeps just 10% to operate the draw. This year a proportion of the money raised per section will go back to that section to pay for any planned projects. You will always win! If, for example a M&J age group are planning a tour, a proportion of the money that is raised by that age group could go towards the cost of tour shirts.

Not only will you be raising much needed funds but you may even win one of the many prizes which range from £10000 cash to International tickets and cases of wine. All this for just £10 each!

Your tickets should be with you before the end of November. Please do not put them in a drawer to gather dust, return them as soon as you can.

Many thanks

Tree of Light

I just wanted to let everyone know that Tree of Light stars are now out in the community, and can be collected and returned to the below places:

  • The Visitor Information Centre, Market Place
  • St Michaels Church, Market Place
  • The United Reformed Church, Park Green
  • Macclesfield Cemetery Office

The stars are there for people to write messages on in memory of loved ones. They need to be returned by Friday 10th November so that they can be laminated and hung on the tree before the event which will take place on Thursday 7th December, Market Place, 5:30pm-6:30pm.

The event will be a chance for people to reflect on their memories of loved ones at Christmas time. There will be Christmas carols, readings and poems. St Michael’s Church will be open for an hour after the event as a place for people to go and think.

U12s Cycle Ride

Macclesfield RUFC Mini and Junior Under 12’s undertook a sponsored cycle ride during the home match against Sheffield Tigers last Saturday.  The 1st XV supported them in their efforts as they rode from Priory Park to Twickenham via therein Premier Rugby Grounds on the way.  A distance just shy of 400 miles between the lads.  The team would like to thank fans on the day for their generous donations of £328 and with sponsorship they expect to raise over £1500.  The funds are being put towards a tour in March 2018.
