Rugby Notes from ‘Clubman’
With the weather and ground conditions putting paid to Macclesfield’s encounter with Sheffield at Priory Park it was a quiet Saturday for MRUFC whilst we watched the various Internationals at home with the autumn series of games coming to a close.
Scotland took pride of place in my book with a stunning 53-24 victory over Australia with England overcoming Samoa with an equally high score of 48-14 with Ireland beating Argentina and Wales holding World Champions New Zealand to a 33-18 winning margin it all points to an interesting Six Nations come 2018 with just Wales v. South Africa to be played this Saturday.
After the success of our give it a go day…. Macclesfield ladies team is taking off! First training session is Sunday at 1pm! No experience required, just turn up and have fun! #maccladies #backingmacc!!
We have just two tables left for the lunch prior to the Luctonians match on the 9th December. This is going to be great fun with comedian Scott Bennett entertaining the diners. So whether you can get some friends together or you just want to come on your own, make sure you book with Jonathan as soon as you can.
Old Boys Lunch
The annual ‘Old Boys Lunch’ this season will be before the Stourbridge game on the 21st April. Three tables have been reserved but, there is still a bit of room left depending on the girth of the diners. A barrel of guest beer will be available and high jinks are expected. Please register your interest as soon as you can with Geoff Rushton – firstname.lastname@example.org
We have a couple of places available for the Xmas lunch if you are quick.
The main pitch remains totally out of bounds for all apart from the groundsmen. Please do not allow anyone beyond the barriers this weekend. Many thanks.
Otley v Macclesfield
The Blues match against Otley will kick off at 2.00pm, there is quite a crowd going over the hills this Saturday. Nothing else to do apart from shopping.
A nice bit of history
Those able to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony at the club recently were universal in the admiration for the consideration and respect demonstrated by the young players of MRUFC. From the impeccable silence through the poignant rendition of the Last Post and Reveille and the reading of The Fallen.
The laying of a wreath at the club’s recently installed Board of Honour was equally well received. The Second World War had a significant impact on the club. At the time routine matches were suspended MRUFC could name 52 playing members. When they recommenced post the War 1 in 4 (13 players) had died! They are remembered on the Board of Honour.
The gloom of this dire situation was penetrated by occasional shafts of light, one was the story of Flying Officer Peter Welch, Royal Air Force, who was reported missing when his plane was shot down over Europe. Peter was destined to be “number 14” on the Board of Honour but eventually a letter was received from his Squadron Leader to inform his parents that Peter had successfully parachuted out and had been seen to walk away from his landing.
At the cessation of hostilities Peter, along with thousands of other Prisoners of War were repatriated to the UK. Peter immediately took up his membership of MRUFC and was later to become the team Secretary and then Club Secretary of the club. Club members of a certain vintage will remember Peter’s brother Mike, who as one of the “Big Three” manned the Team Selection Committee for much of the late 60s through early 80s.
