Sandbach 3rd XV 5 Macclesfield 4th XV 5 points.
Trentham Veterans 5 Macclesfield 4th XV 22 points.
These scores require some explanation; the 4th team were due to play a league match against Bowdon 3rds, but they withdrew on Friday morning not being able to raise a side. When skipper Jeremy Bostock informed his players, via WhatsApp, the howls of annoyance over missing their third Saturday fixture in succession took on a chorus of protest.
Bostock assumed the task of finding an opposition; he spent all day on the phone and eventually Macclesfield, Sandbach and Trentham each played two separate halves of rugby against each other.
The side had a familiar look about it: front row Jason Walker, Mike Dale and Geoff Chan all powerful scrummagers, it’s a truism that if you keep the set pieces strong the side will always be on the front foot. Locks were the huge Jack Nicholson, Simon Street and Bostock himself with a back row of Scott Goodfellow, Louis Smith and Matt Price. Those forwards were always able to dominate their own ball and help themselves to lots of turnovers.
The backs had the two Smiths: Paul and Nick at Number 9 and 10 respectively, with Jordan Wilson and Michael Moore in the centre. This meant that our attacks had fluency and aggression.
Wingers Ryan Brown and Bill Latham loved the space their mates created. James Parsons showed his utility prowess, recently he’s been fly half, centre and now full back, which he says he enjoys best, it allows him the freedom to carry the ball from deep back to the enemy!
In the first session we were rather rusty as we hadn’t played for two weeks but against Trentham showed much more togetherness and scored 20 points in only 40 minutes – an excellent return.
Jeremey was pleased at the outcome of the entire afternoon and happy that all his Friday endeavours as Fixture Secretary had born fruit. All the players were fulsome in their appreciation. However he did say in the post match huddle they need to be on at their best on Saturday; Marple 2nds are top of the league and so far have a 100% record.
