A minute’s silence was held over the weekend in memory of rugby player and friend, Zane Gills.
Zane, who played on Macc’s fourth team, sadly lost his life on a boating accident in Barcelona ahead of New Year’s Eve. Being remembered as “the guy with the best smile” and a man who “touched many people’s hearts”, Zane will definitely be missed by many.
Sailors around the world have paid tribute to Zane, who also took part in the Volvo Ocean Race from 2011 to 2012. Zane shared a passion for both boating and rugby. He will certainly be missed by many.
Zane’s wife announced in a post on Facebook: “It’s with disbelief I have to share with you that Zane has tragically died in an accident. We are all totally shocked and devastated by the news. He was an incredible man and will be very sorely missed. We ask respectfully for space at this time and we will inform everyone of funeral arrangements in Lymington and Australia soon.”
Zane played for the fourth team last season 2018-19, and was remembered by captain Jeremy Bostock as “a great guy to have in the team, who loved his sport and quietly went about his business in the back row. We all have fond memories of him at Macc.”
