Macclesfield RUFC is proud to announce the success of our U14 player Billy Birkett who has accepted a sports scholarship offer from Sedbergh School, starting in September- great news in these strange times.
Billy has been a member of the Mini and Junior section from the age of 5, and has developed into a strong, capable and committed player. His athleticism has gone from strength to strength, giving high-intensity effort throughout any practice session or game. He’s robust, and one of the fastest on the field, finishing off games with almost equal intensity as the start, showing exceptional stamina for his age.
Billy plays fullback, wing or centre (although will turn his hand to any position), and reads the game well, being rarely out of position in any phase of play. The last two seasons he has also developed leadership skills, able to communicate ideas to others and execute them as a team. By the same token Billy will listen and work with other players’ ideas.
An important aspect with Billy, developing more as he has got older is his ability to respond to coaching, something which will doubt stand him in good stead in his future at Sedbergh.
The “player pathway” is something often talked about at grass roots Junior Rugby, and too often young players are missing out on entry in to senior rugby. Whether that be playing social rugby, 4th, 3rd, 2nd or 1st XV rugby, Macclesfield is keen to ensure all our Junior players have the opportunity if they chose to accept.
The club wishes Billy well on his future at Sedbergh, as he joins a school with an impressive rugby alumnus (Will Carling, Will Greenwood, David Barnes to name just a-few).
Good Luck Billy
