More than Rugby – ASHBROOK

ASHBROOK are a true family run business specialising in Plant, Access and Agricultural Hire with supporting Transport and Groundworks division.  They employ approx. 110 people across our three sites based in Congleton, Warrington and Bangor, who’s aim it is to ensure that ASHBROOK are on time, every time, nationwide.  Thanks to their dedicated staff- we are!

Why are you involved with Macclesfield RUFC?

The Ashbrook family became involved with the club when company MD, James Ashbrook, brought his son along to take part mini rugby.  Harry thoroughly enjoyed his experience and has progressed from the under 6’s and now plays for the under 10’s.  Seeing first-hand the positive effect that a combination of teamwork and physical activity had on the children, inspired James to support the excellent work done at the club and to take up Thursday night walk-rugby himself.

‘As a key partner we’re proud to support the club in lots of different ways, but particularly through the Blue Laces campaign.  Teamwork, respect, discipline, sportsmanship and the ability to have fun, are qualities I place in high regard, so sponsoring an award that celebrates all these attributes in children and adults, is important to me’ states James.

James goes on to say, ‘as a local employer and as our business grows, it is very important to us that we remain relevant to the local community.  Being a key partner to Macclesfield Rugby Club and supporting other youth groups, such as Congleton Young Farmers allows us to keep us in touch with local community needs.  It truly is a partnership; ASHBROOK has provided sponsorship, training lights and sports kits, to name a few items and the rugby club have been very supportive of us, for that we are very grateful.  Teamwork makes the dream work, on and off the pitch!’

How has the coronavirus effected your business?

We, like everyone else, find ourselves in a world very different to that of even only a few of weeks ago.  As a supplier to key industries we are under government instruction to remain open to critical businesses.  In doing so we have taken every measure to ensure the safety of our dedicated staff and customers, quickly rolling out homeworking, where possible, stringent safety procedures for our transport and maintenance staff and a no contact vehicle handover procedure with customers.  We thank everyone for their diligence in ensuring that the strictest safety measures are maintained.

We are proud of the role we can play in supporting critical industries during this time.  Through tractor, trailer and telehandler hire we provide farmers with the ability to feed their livestock and to tend their crops, which will go on to feed the nation. For the construction industry there is the need to support critical projects such as hospital development, here we have the potential to help through our plant hire equipment.  We also have a touch point into distribution with telehandlers needed to move goods to supermarkets and other suppliers.  As a business we are only set up to hire to other businesses so there isn’t the opportunity to hire to individuals for garden landscaping etc.

Like most companies, this is an extremely testing time for us with custom taking a sharp decline, as construction sites across the UK close, leading to many vehicles coming off hire. The impact of this is not only loss of income, but the need collect machines from around the UK and store them at our depots with the extra associated costs falling to ASHBROOK.  In addition to this the groundwork and civil divisions have seen their work completely dry up.  This has led to the difficult decision to furlough many members of staff.  We hope, only for a short time, but this is really in the ‘hands’ of the virus, so we ask that we all do our bit to help to defeat this silent killer and continue to only travel for essential items, wash our hands frequently and maintain social distancing.

During this time, more than ever, the support of Macclesfield Rugby Club and its supporters, is greatly appreciated as we negotiate the challenges of keeping our staff and customers safe, temporary cashflow decreases and planning for future recovery.

Little things are the big things at a time like this, so liking and sharing our posts on social media or recommending us to family and friends will make a big difference to us- thank you!

If you work in agriculture, construction or distribution and you need to keep working ASHBROOK are here to support you.  Please contact us on 01260 270817 (Congleton), 01248 364 944 (Bangor), 01925 599 080 (Warrington), for new hire or support with existing business.  Please note we can only offer hires to companies and not the general public.

If you’re looking to purchase machines then please contact Richard Carless on 07801 049 395.

Finally, we would like to say a massive thank you to all the essential and key workers for their self-less efforts in keeping us all safe and well cared for.
