Girls Rugby is coming to Macclesfield

Macclesfield Rugby Club is delighted to announce the launch of a Girls’ U13 Junior Rugby Team, in September 2020 (Covid-19 allowing).

The Club is recruiting girls who will be aged 11 to 12 from 1st September 2020 (Year 7 and 8 in the next school year).  Head Coach of the team, Pip Gregory, is looking forward to welcoming the first Girls’ Junior Team at Macclesfield RUFC.

Pip has over 18 years’ experience in sports coaching, including a recent stint in the USA; she has a Coaching Sports degree and holds a Level 2 England Rugby Coaching Award. It goes without saying that her first love is rugby, immensely enjoying her time in the Ladies 1st XV:  “My ambition is to get a girls team set up within my home club! I want to be a part of setting up the team and give the opportunities in the sport that I didn’t have when I first started.  It’s the sport I love, so to develop it and be an advocate to change the girl’s lives is a huge positive for myself, all the people involved and the Club”.

Phil Mason, Mini and Junior Chairman said: “It has been an ambition of mine for a couple of years now to create a Girls’ Junior Rugby Team alongside the lads.  Currently girls can play in mixed teams until U11 when they have to separate, and sadly we didn’t have a team for them to go into.  Having a Girls’ side has the potential to attract many more girls to the game, and hopefully feed into our own Ladies 1st XV or even further”.

Macclesfield RUFC is affiliated to the Quilter Kids First programme, providing an inclusive and safe environment for Children to learn to play Rugby Union.  Rugby’s Core Values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship are at the heart of all of the Club’s training.  Training and games are normally on Sunday Mornings, with other opportunities for midweek training.  As rugby is a highly physical game, the Club ensures all players are trained to tackle correctly, greatly reducing the chances of injury. 

The Club will be holding a taster session on the evening of Thursday 3rd September 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  After an introduction Pip will run an ‘Inner Warrior’ event for the girls; the event will be run in line with RFU Covid-19 guidelines, and the Club will provide food for all the competitors after the event!
