Chairman’s Update 6th November 2020

Dear All,

A huge thank you to all Members, Sponsors, Supporters and Stakeholders in our Rugby Club, including members of the Macclesfield Community for your continued engagement and involvement in the activities, on and off the pitch, that the Club has been able to provide as we tread the path of the unknown in respect of the Pandemic and the changing limitations on our lives and livelihoods. The support has been magnificent across all age groups and has contributed greatly to the Club’s income at a time when every penny is so important.

I could not write this update without mentioning the recent Priory Park Horror. David Wilkinson (Wilkey), in collaboration with Macclesfield Amateur Dramatic Society (MADS) and working with Andy Appleyard (Apps), put together a tremendous event over three nights of Halloween. The narrative followed the historical, and tragic, story of the Priory that stood on the grounds of Priory Park and the persecution of the Nuns by Henry VIII. The souls of the Nuns and other local people haunt the grounds of over Halloween to this day. Hundreds of people came to the Club over the three days to witness the horrors of the past and I am sure the event will be a regular feature in the Club’s social calendar.

The new Sin Bin Bar has been extremely popular and thanks to all those involved in getting it built and operational so quickly and, of course, to those who have given generously of their money, materials, time and energy. Work will continue to complete the Sin Bin Bar over the next few weeks and will include Heating! I can’t wait for the time when we can all enjoy beer and banter outside when the season is next in full swing and the weather is sunny and warm!

To all those involved in making last Tuesday such a success on and off the pitch a big thanks. The Club was buzzing until the 10pm curfew.

Following the most recent announcement from the Government and from the RFU we are now effectively locked down until the 2nd December and back at stage A on the RFU roadmap. With regret the Club will be closed and all Club activities will cease until further notice although Maggie and Barry (The Barbecue) are able to offer a take away service from the Club kitchen. Andy and the team will be planning for us to resume as soon as possible so watch this space.

We have looked at the guidelines and can confirm that we are still able to hold a remembrance ceremony at the Club this Sunday. Phil Mason is circulating the details. The numbers will however be limited. The Roustabouts are also able to continue their great work in maintaining the grounds every Tuesday morning and work can continue on the refurbishments to the Clubhouse in readiness for our return.

Andy is working with volunteers to keep us all involved and occupied through our social media. Macctive will return for those who want to retain and improve on their fitness and skills during the break; A race night is planned for the 27th November by popular request and a Club fun quiz night is in the offing.

On a different subject and following feedback from members we have decided not to continue the proposed partnership with GiveToLocal. It is still in the very early stages but already it is clear that the initiative is not appropriate for us and that members would prefer to support the Club directly rather than through a third party where a fee is involved. Also, and quite rightly, people prefer to support the Club in specific areas and on specific and costed projects where the Club can demonstrate that funds are being invested to the benefit of Members.

Until we return

Stay safe and sane everyone and look after each other.
