Chairman’s Update 14th March 2021

Dear All,

We are all looking forward to the resumption of Rugby including walking rugby, touch and tag, across all age grades and seniors at the Club from Tuesday 30th March and to full contact, playing the adapted game (no scrums or mauls), from 26th April. If all goes to plan scrum and maul training will resume from 17th May with the expectation of the full game including scrums and mauls recommencing from 31st May.

Many of you will have read Wilkeys article on the website (A new roadmap for rugby and Macc 7’s) and will also be looking forward to a repeat of the very successful festival of rugby weekend on the 17th and 18th April. A ‘pitch up and play’ day is planned for the 24th April. This is an opportunity for any adult to come down to the Club and give the game a go.

The big event during this Summer of fun is the Macclesfield 7’s tournament on the 9th and 10th July. The tournament is being promoted now and the weekend will be full of fun and entertainment for everyone, click here for more details. Keep your eyes and ears open for other activities being considered including a repeat of the Macclesfield Blues v Macclesfield Whites match in May under the adapted laws and a Juniors 7’s tournament possibly in June.

All these activities are of course, subject to the Government Roadmap being reached along the way. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have worked so hard on the refurbishment of the changing facilities at the Club. These will be completed very soon and will include facilities for our Women and Girls.

It is great news that in line with the Government guidelines, the Sin Bin Bar will open from Tuesday 13th April! The rule of six and other Covid protocols will apply and we ask members to respect these and help to protect themselves, others and the Club.

Since December we have invested in a converted 40ft container to replace the 20ft Guinness container along the far side of the bar and Andy has laid decking behind the Sin Bin Bar facing the main pitch. The roustabouts have very kindly donated some money towards more furniture for the area. The aim is to open up weekday evenings Tuesday to Friday and during the day on Saturday and Sunday depending on demand. Thursday night Club night social will resume properly from the 15th April. If you know of anyone who might be interested in bar work please let Andy know.

The income the Club generates from the Sin Bin Bar is hugely important for the Club so please can I encourage members and supporters of the Rugby Club to support the bar when it is open? The money we raise enables us to continue investment in our Club facilities.

As we look forward to being able to open the Spiral Lounge and the Priory Suite, the Club is investing in a rebuild of the Priory Suite bar. The design and build will be done by Pete Sampson and Scissorwood Ltd with additional support from Chris Simpson (electrics), Rick Jones (plumbing) and Danny Avery (building). This investment is made possible by the generosity of Club members with their money, time, skills and materials and by the active participation of the wider membership and supporters of the Club on and off the field of play.

One of the best ways to support the cost of Club projects is to participate in the OneClub draw. The One Club Draw has been set up to help raise funds for your club and 100% of the money raised is spent on club projects. For as little as £5 a month, the cost of a couple of drinks, you have the opportunity of winning between £25 and £100 in each of our ten draws a year. In the bumper Christmas and end of season draws you can win £1,000. A ticket costs £1 so a minimum £5 investment buys you five opportunities to win prizes at each draw. For more info please click here.

The Club is looking forward to hosting the Macclesfield Family Festival again on the 17th July. Rugby Club members who buy a standard ticket will benefit from VIP status entitling them to access to the Priory Suite and Sin Bin Bar on the day. The club will send out a link in the coming week to purchase your tickets with the VIP status. Later in the Summer, on the 7th August, a comedy festival is planned at the Club. This promises to be great fun for families during the day and adults only in the evening. Our members will have 10% discount on all tickets, please click here and use discount code MACCRUGBY.

Of course, all activities on and off the pitch are subject to the Government guidelines which could still change, but we have to be excited and optimistic for the Summer and in looking forward to a full season of league rugby from early September.

Thank you to all members of Macclesfield Rugby Club, to our sponsors and to all those members of the wider community who participate and actively support the Rugby Club. We look forward to welcoming you back over the coming weeks and months for a Summer of fun and a look forward to the 2021/2022 season. If you know of anyone who might want to join the Rugby Club as a player, as a social member or as a sponsor, please encourage them to join us. There is room for everyone.
