Barry Jones RIP 22.06.1933 – 21.02.2022

It is with great sadness that I have to pass on the news that this week, we lost our longest serving Club member, Barry Jones.  As well as being the longest serving member of the Club he loved so much, Barry was a former 2nd XV captain, held every office in the Club including: Treasurer, Secretary, Chairman and President, and he truly deserved the title of Honorary Life Member of Macclesfield RUFC.

Barry Jones in the MRUFC A XV 1950/51 season

Barry joined the Club in 1950 as a schoolboy, and as mentioned was the Club’s longest serving member, and was involved in everything that went on at the Club including helping to build the car park at the London Road Club back in the 50`s. He Captained the A XV (second team) for season 1960-1, the last season the Club were at London Road, and was part of the working party that made the move from London Road up to Tytherington, and 20 years later, Barry was a key figure in the move from Tytherington to Priory Park, and one of a small but select band of members who kept the Club moving forward despite themselves.

At the beginning of season 1962-63, and still 2nd team captain, Barry was the cause of a third team game being cancelled because he chose to get married on a Saturday during the season and his vice captain, Derek Way, was his best man! The Club was lucky to field any teams that weekend!

Unfortunately, Barry broke his leg playing rugby, and bringing up two young children, and having moved into private practice, he decided to retire from playing rugby, but he did do a stint of refereeing before looking to fill the management void resulting from few past players stepping into administration roles at the Club.

As well as being a great supporter of Macclesfield RUFC, Barry was also extremely supportive of Macclesfield Town Football Club and Macclesfield Cricket Club. Other local organisations benefited from Barry`s support and he was President of The Park Green and Old Boys Club, Past President of Macclesfield Probus, a member and Chairman of Round Table and 41 Club and a past President of Rotary as well as being a committee member and past Chairman of the Conservative Patrons’ Club and a member of the Conservative Party.

Before his retirement, Barry was senior partner at Heyward Shepherds Accountants in Macclesfield and was very much involved with Kings School and the Old Boys Association, having been President for over twenty years; and recently had a room named after him in the new Kings School.

We were truly lucky to have him involved with our Club, and as a mark of respect, the Club will be holding a minutes applause prior to the kick-off at the next home game on March 5th, fittingly, the pre-match lunch that day is to celebrate 50 years of Mini and Junior rugby at Macclesfield; I`m sure if Barry had still been with us, he would have loved to be there himself.

As news of Barry`s passing has travelled around the community, there`s been one word which keeps coming up from people who knew him……’Gentleman’.

A real Gentleman, a true Rugby man, an ardent and long serving member of the Club and a great guy; he`ll be sorely missed by everyone who knew him – and there were many! Our sympathies and best wishes go out to wife Jennifer, sons Julian and Robin and to Barry’s Grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are as follows;

Friday 18th March 10:45 at St Michael & All Angels Church Macclesfield. Followed by a Private Family Ceremony at Macclesfield Crematorium at 12:15.
The family welcome all of Barry’s friends to attend the funeral ceremony at 10.45 and celebration of Barry’s life at the place he loved – Macclesfield Rugby Club from 1:00 PM.
The club bars will be open from 12noon.
