Macclesfield Express – Prestbury Six’s

Macc Rugby Club retained their hold on the annual Prestbury 6 a side cricket competition beating The Admiral Rodney in the final by 6 runs. The Rodney did take the rules to the limit fielding 3 Macc 1st team cricketers, however they still lost to the rugby club

The annual tournament was played in glorious summer conditions in the picturesque setting of Prestbury CC. There were teams from Prestbury FC, The Prestbury Social Club, Prestbury Junior School, Prestbury CC, Kings School old Boys & Macclesfield Rugby Club. The sun was out, so was Pete Harpers leather skin, David Mair sat in the shadows complaining about everything.

After a hard fought group stage Macc Rugby Club won the group games and were due to face the old enemy, The Rodney in the Cup final.

As both teams prepared Prestbury Junior School beat Prestbury Football club in a one sided final with local legends Rob Heartly & Tony Howcroft hitting the winning runs.

The final was a close game with The Rodney posting a respectable 63 in their 6 overs, superb bowling by Rob Oliver, ably assisted by his son Harry Oliver behind the stumps. Harry Blackwell batted very well but was out to one of the best balls of the day, Toby Moule didn’t really trouble the scorers, Sam Buckingham pushing the scoring along however some expert fielding by David Dickinson, Harry Oliver and Tim “How short are your shorts” really stemmed the flow of runs.

The father and son combo of Pete and Charlie Harper opened the batting and got the rugby club off to a great start, Tim & Gus Fiennes guided the middle order with the Olivers seeing the game home safely and securing another win.

The trophy was presented by Jamie Donaldson (Ex Ryder Cup player) to the winning team Captain, Charlie Harper. A great day and always good to come home with silverwear
