Macc take on Birkenhead Park in Cheshire Cup

Thursday 25th August, 8.00 pm Kick-off, Upper Park

By David Wilkinson

It’s been many a year since we travelled to the Wirral to take on Birkenhead Park at their historic Upper Park ground. Birkenhead Park was at the very start of the formation of Rugby Union Clubs in 1871 and has played at their Upper Park ground since 1875. In the early years the ground was used to host both Wales and England home international matches. The club would also host numerous matches against the all Blacks and Australia, and as a club side they were one of the best in the UK for many years. Like many North West clubs they did not fare well in the professional era. Last season they finished 5th in North One West league, that was topped by unbeaten Stockport.

First and foremost both sides will be out for a win on Thursday night and progression into the next round. That said, the game provides an excellent opportunity to give certain players an opportunity to show themselves in full-on match conditions before the start of the season. The cup game has the added advantage of allowing 5 replacements, two more than the league matches.

The Macclesfield team will line up as follows:

  1. Dan Percival
  2. Brendan Berry
  3. Junior Gelsthorpe
  4. Harry Harding
  5. Tom Burden
  6. Seb Pemberton
  7. Phil Laing
  8. James Oliver
  9. Dan Martin
  10. Charlie Ellis
  11. Sam Brown
  12. Harry Blackwell
  13. Harry Oliver
  14. Sam Broster
  15. Tom Jennings
  16. Marcus Pyle
  17. Kai Fagon
  18. Elliot Alston
  19. Louis Singelton
  20. Lloyd Smith-Coates

From the Hull game, Tom Burden comes into the Second Row, with Seb Pemberton moving to 6, and Brendan Berry moving to Hooker. Harry Oliver returns from injury into the Centre with Harry Blackwell moving to Full Back, and Sam Brown having a long awaited return to the left Wing. The bench includes Kai Fagon, on debut, moving to the Club from Burnage; he looked impressive with ball in hand in the Macc 7s – an athletic 6!
