SOCIAL RUGBY IS BACK AT MACC!

As some of you will be aware, the rigid rule book of the NOWIRUL meant that some of our teams were excluded from the league at the end of last season; “enough is enough”, the fourth-teamers cried! Against this background a new era dawns for social rugby at Macclesfield; this new season sees the start of a series of friendly fixtures, played outside of any league structure.

Jeremy Bostock, 4th team Captain and evergreen Club legend said: “A good number of the 4ths squad are at an age where playing every week is becoming a real challenge; In addition, in previous seasons the rules of the leagues seem to have conspired to stop us playing some fixtures, rather than encouraging us to play. Going forwards we will be able to determine who and when we play, and ensure social men’s rugby thrives at Macclesfield RUFC”. Rupert Dixon, Team Manager, and good egg, said: “We will have 2 or 3 fixtures a month; principally on Saturday afternoons, but with occasional fixtures on Friday evenings. We have some familiar opponents, such as Sandbach and Stockport, as well as new match-ups with other teams such as Helsby and Eccles”.

The season will commence with an intensive training session at Beartown Brewery on 10th September to which everyone is welcome (Contact Sam Avery for details), and will be topped-off with a rugby tour in April. Whilst a good number of the squad are in the autumn of their rugby careers, this is not a Vets team; the social rugby squad is open to players of all ages who want to play social rugby.

To get us started we need your help, we need your suggestions for an appropriate team name. Send your proposals (nothing obscene) to: info@maccrugby.co.uk. The winning entrant will receive a yard of ale (or an appropriate substitute) to be consumed at the Former Players’ Lunch, on 11th March 2023. Closing date is midnight Saturday 3rd September. Get your thinking caps on!
