Chairman’s news letter – Membership

The membership portal opened in August and subscriptions were due to be paid from the 1st September 2022 immediately prior to the start of the season. As we now go in to November, I would like to thank all those who have paid their membership as a player, social member, family member and/or season ticket holder so far this year. Membership subscriptions contribute massively to the everyday running of our Club and without them we would not be able to achieve most of what we do.

I wanted to repeat the plea I made in the match day programme a couple of weeks ago, to all those who consider themselves to be members of Macclesfield Rugby Club, but who have yet to pay their subscription, to please do so at your earliest convenience. Your Club relies on subscription income to continue maintaining and improving its facilities on and off the pitch. It is particularly important that Players are members of the Rugby Club in order to benefit from the RFU personal liability and accident insurance cover in order to protect themselves and others.

Last Saturday demonstrated how far we have come in recent years, particularly given the disruption of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The day kicked off with a demonstration of Walking Touch Rugby from that group playing a fixture against our friends from Wath. This was followed by a great fixture from the U12’s on the main pitch winning by 65 – 20. The Womens XV kicked off at 2pm in their first fixture of the season and we were treated to a very entertaining game by the 1st XV against Kendal from 3pm taking us up to 6th in the table. Over 100 people attended the Presidents lunch with Ex England International Chris Jones as guest speaker. The atmosphere throughout the day was brilliant and the Clubhouse was buzzing. It is a huge testament to all the Players, officials, families, friends, supporters, sponsors, staff and other stakeholders because it is all of you who together, create the atmosphere we all enjoy.

I would like to invite anyone who enjoys what the Club offers and who shares our vision, but who is not a member, to go on the website and search under ‘membership’ to find a category that suits you and sign up. Social membership if you are under 60 is £100 (£95 if 60+) and can be paid in one lump sum or over a period of time. This basic membership is required as a prerequisite for all players. The Club offers the following benefits to social members:

  • 10% bar discount (The Club gave over £8,000 back to members last year)
  • 50% discount on entry to 1st XV matches
  • Opportunity to buy international tickets
  • Voting rights (18+)
  • Discounted room hire for functions and events

Playing membership includes the following benefits:

  • Playing subscription (1st, 2nd and 3rd XV)
  • Coaching support
  • RFU personal liability and accident insurance. No individual should put themselves or others at risk by playing without this cover.
  • Playing shirt
  • Post-Match meals
  • Family/Friend season ticket

The benefits can only be enjoyed on proof of membership.

All this represents very good value for money even when compared with membership of other sports clubs and the money is reinvested in continually improving facilities for the members.

So…Please, please go on the website and become a member.

Our Rugby Club is registered under the Co-Operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014 and operates for the mutual benefit of its members and the community. Our core business is that of the great game of Rugby and we pride ourselves in having developed a good reputation in the participation and development of rugby players from the age of 5 through to 60+. The player pathway is robust and can be demonstrated by the fact that even last week nine players in the 1st XV squad, playing at level 5 in the national framework, came through the player pathway. We now have a pathway for Girls to progress in to the Women’s team and we have a healthy participation in Walking and Touch Rugby.

We have developed a simple but clear business model to ensure that we deliver on our aim of being a Happy, Successful and Sustainable Rugby Club at the heart of the community that plays at the highest level it can achieve across all age grades, genders and types of rugby, within its financial means. The social life of the Club is vibrant and we strive to give people an experience that leaves them feeling compelled to return to the Club and support activities both on and off the field of play. We have been developing ‘Priory Park Venue’ as our hospitality arm, with its own website, which aims to grow our commercial activities in the community and generate income that can be re-invested in our rugby. All of these things are done for the mutual benefit of members and the community.

We have ambition for the future that includes extending the Clubhouse to give us more social and hospitality space upstairs and improved player facilities downstairs; Bringing the 5 acres of land to the rear of the main pitch back in to use as we increase the participation of young players in the game and other possible developments of the site that will further enhance our opportunities to deliver a facility that becomes the chosen destination for individuals and families across the community to participate in and develop as skilled rugby players for the future following the core values of the game.

Please don’t let your Club down…. It needs you!
