Wirral Preview

By David Wilkinson

Saturday sees the 1st team back in action at Wirral Rugby Club in Birkenhead, the last game in the first half of the season. Last season Macclesfield managed to win both contests, but the game at Wirral was very close and for the return fixture, at Priory Park, Wirral were under-strength. So far this season Macclesfield sit two places above their opponents, but with only one win separating the sides. Last time out, Wirral was piped at the post, away at Stockport 24 – 22; and will be carrying that performance forward to Saturday’s challenge. Although Macclesfield lost at home to Lymm, it was a decent performance against a team that, by their own admission, had played the best game of their season, thus far.

A win could move Macclesfield a place up the table, as Stockport, above them, travel to league leaders Blackburn, which is sure to be a tough encounter. Head Coach, Ben Wade, will be under no illusions as to the challenge that faces Macclesfield on the Wirral: “Wirral has had some good results recently, taking Stockport to the wire and getting a similar result to Macclesfield’s against Lymm.

The team welcome’s back Captain James Oliver, recovered from injury, and Jordon Simpson, from his one match suspension. We only got a glimpse of Simmo before his cardings, last time out, but it was obvious from the off that he has not lost any of his Back Row skills, strength and pace. The Pack is packed with pace and will want to play their hi-tempo style of rugby. The backs have plenty of fire-power throughout and will want to convert that into points. Overall it is probably one of the strongest sides on paper that we will be fielding, so far this season, which will be needed if we are to overturn Wirral.

Kick-off will be at 2.15 pm please come and give your support to the boys, Wirral’s Memorial ground is on Thornton Common Road. Your support means a lot to the boys; it gives them a massive lift, as their 16th man. The team is: 1. Dan Percival, 2. Brendan Berry, 3. James Cross, 4. Harry Harding, 5. Rhys Davies, 6. Seb Pemberton, 7. Jordon Simpson, 8. James Oliver, 9. Danny Martin, 10. Charlie Attis, 11. Sam Brown, 12. Terence Babarinsa, 13. Harry Oliver, 14. Lloyd Smith-Coates, 15. Tom Jennings; 16. Tom Burden, 17. Phil Laing, 18. Louis Singleton.
