WALKING TOUCH RUGBY BRAVES THE ELEMENTS

It’s the all-year-round game for anyone that wants to chuck the egg-shaped ball about, and it has become a major part of Macclesfield Rugby Club, since the games inception. Here, Walking Rugby stalwart, Mike Keeling, reports on last Thursday evening, when the boys turned out in arctic conditions; they go again tonight on the Astro.

With the freezing temperatures making rugby a non event for most players, it was without fear that the intrepid MRUFC Walking Touch Rugby group kitted-up and took to the field for their annual Christmas Bonanza.

Minus 6 degrees and a frozen surface meant that the 1stXV were unable to use the big, snow covered pitch at the Club and were benevolently allocated the Astro by the WTR group, who did a straight swap and went on the big pitch under the lights. 8-a-side is just about the perfect number, and everyone enjoyed a full hour of rugby whilst generating enough heat to avoid frostbite and enough of a thirst to seek beer in the Clubhouse later.

The annual awards followed along with Maggie & Barry’s famous pies.  ‘Players’ Player’ was Adam Duffy, ‘Most improved’ went to Dave Broadhead, ‘Unsung hero’ – Mike Keeling; and Jerry Frain was awarded for his unstinting work with the whistle and turning out more often than any of the players.  The award of shame (most ‘Yellow Cards’ in the Year) was awarded to Matt Nuttall whose forfeit was to drink Rhubarb & Custard Cider!  A visit by Santa followed and a great time was had by all.

The Walking Touch Rugby group meets (almost) every Thursday throughout the year and is for anyone with, or without, a rugby background.  No tackles, no lineouts, no scrummages.  It’s a mixed gender, fast paced, passing game and a great social activity ideal for aged players wanting to get their hands on the ball again, or for newcomers to the game looking for some basic skills. Contact the Club for more details; better still, turn up on a Thursday night with your boots.
