Macclesfield Rugby Club – Commercial Director Role and Job Description

Macclesfield is a thriving Rugby Club in the heart of the community with the 1st XV playing in the Regional One Northwest League (level 5) and the 2nd XV challenging for promotion to the NOWIRUL Cotton Traders Premier League this season. The 3rd XV plays in division 3 of the NOWIRUL leagues whilst the 4th XV is a social side playing regularly for the enjoyment of the game. The existing structure of four men’s teams, a women’s team in a development league, a thriving colts set up and a hugely popular and successful minis and juniors has been strengthened by the addition of the girl’s age grades and the walking and touch rugby groups. The coaching team has been reinforced with first class experience and is aligned with our One Cub strategy. We have a clear player pathway from U6 through to adult rugby including a recently established development group from U15 and in to the transition to adult rugby.

The Commercial Director is a member of the Executive Committee and is responsible for defining and implementing the commercial strategy for the club as a key part of delivering the One Club Strategy. The post-holder’s prime responsibility is to maximize revenue and profit streams through the club’s commercial activities, Priory Park and Priory Park Venue, to support re-investment in to the core purpose of Rugby. The role will span Sponsorship, Partnerships, International tickets, Hospitality, Business and facility hires and fundraising across the Club’s assets.

Role Outline

The Commercial Director is a member of the Executive Committee and is responsible for defining and implementing the commercial strategy for the club. The role will span Sponsorship, Partnerships, International tickets, Hospitality, Business and facility hires across the Club’s assets.

Key Objectives

  • To agree a commercial budget with the finance director on an annual basis and to achieve sales and profit targets agreed
  • To report such data (e.g., future bookings, costs etc) to the finance director in a timely and consistent way to allow him to prepare accurate forecasts, budgets and other financial reports
  • To identify and champion opportunities to improve the club’s revenue and profitability
  • To establish a high performing team that can implement and deliver the club’s commercial strategy
  • To ensure compliance with all rules and regulations applicable to the commercial function of the club
  • To embed the One Club culture and core values of the club through the commercial strategy
  • To build the club’s reputation as a quality and professional commercial enterprise
  • To deliver a safe and social customer experience that gives people compelling reasons to be engaged and involved in the Rugby Club as their preferred destination for sports and social recreation.
  • To take a leadership role in managing and driving commercial/change projects

Key Responsibilities

  • To monitor and review commercial team performance against operational, financial and service targets
  • To develop Priory Park Venue as a professional commercial enterprise for hospitality and business users
  • To identify existing and new assets at Priory Park, through which the club can maximise revenues and profit without undermining its core purpose of rugby
  • To chair the Social sub-committee and ensure that members functions and events are well planned, coordinated, promoted and attended
  • To put the customer at the forefront of decision making
  • To review business processes, programs, and systems for continuous improvement
  • To establish a fair and transparent bid and allocation process for the distribution of international tickets
  • Conduct regular meetings and communicate business plans to the commercial team and the executive committee
  • To attract, support, maintain and enhance investment and sponsorship for the club by building and maintaining excellent relationships with individuals and businesses in the community.
  • To identify and action opportunities to raise additional funds for the rugby club through members and the wider community and to agree projects to champion
  • To deliver frequent, timely and positive coverage across all available media for the club whilst protecting the club brand

Key Skills

Experience

  • Leading and influencing change
  • Strategic planning, problem solving and decision making in a commercial environment
  • Strong track record in commercial management preferably in a sports club environment.
  • Proven track record in contract negotiation and management.
  • Significant evidence of building successful teams and creating a high-performance culture
  • Experience in Rugby or other sports organisations is desirable but not essential

  • Ability to interact and cooperate with all employees and members of the Executive Committee.
  • Maintain professional internal and external relationships that meet the Club’s core values.
  • Commercially astute, creative and strategic thinker that brings added value to the team, with innovative ideas that could further enhance the club’s commercial opportunities.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels. Encourages open communication across the rugby club and all stakeholders
  • Excellent numerical skills with demonstrable experience of budget setting and control.
  • Financially literate
  • Excellent planning, organisational and presentation skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate the strategic objectives and priorities of the club and delegate appropriately
  • Target driven and focussed.
