Macclesfield 2nd XV 48 – Vale of Lune 13

By Paul Jakubowski

A tremendous performance from Hector Tomlinson helped the seconds to a messy win against Vale of Lune on Saturday and gain promotion to the NOWIRUL Premier League next season. Vale had beaten Macclesfield earlier in the season and despite a long bus journey down Vale started the better and looked sharper in the early exchanges. On the odd occasion when Macclesfield did have the ball poor decisions led to opportunities being squandered.

Vale took a deserved lead, driving over from a lineout which was converted. This shook the seconds out of their stupor and after some sharp handling Alex Hart, put the first points on the board for the home side. Vale increased their lead after Macclesfield conceded a penalty in front of the posts. Hector Tomlinson was sharp to a loose ball and darted over from close range, which was quickly followed by a score from Carl Droy, to make it 15- 10 at half time to the home side.

The second half opened with tries from Louis Gray created by Dale Crompton, and Hector Tomlinson after a surging run by Harry King and a superb individual try from the youngster Sam Davies followed soon after. After these three scores the game was petering out as neither side could gain territory or control. A brief melee saw Crompton yellow-carded allowing Vale to take advantage to score again from a lineout before tries from, Davies and the effervescent Tomlinson, concluded proceedings.

Although pleased with the score, the players felt that they are yet to put in an eighty-minute performance in the second half of the season. With the opportunity to clinch the league title on Saturday, against Sedgley Park, they will be aiming to do so in front of a boisterous home crowd.

Sedgley Park Preview

With last weekend’s 48 -13 win against Vale of Lune clinching promotion to the NOWIRUL Premier League next season, the second XV can win the Division One title at home to Sedgley Park 3rd XV this Saturday. Macclesfield 2nd XV previously won this league in 2004 and has not won a league competition since the Premier League in 2017. It’s been a fantastic season for this young side winning 14 out of 16 fixtures, unbeaten in the league at home and scoring over 500 points thus far. The coaches have introduced senior colts into the team as a part of the transition pathway and they have not looked out of place at this level.

The Sedgley Park team has struggled this season and are in a relegation battle with Tarleton, a win for them would be an important step in their attempts to stay in the league. The Macclesfield squad is grounded, looking forward to training on Thursday and will not be underestimating the challenge on Saturday; kick-off is at 3.00pm.
