2nd XV Quarter Final Review and Semi Final Preview

Macclesfield 2nd XV 121 Kendal 5

By Paul Jakubowski

Having secured promotion as the NOWRIL Division 1 Champions, in March, the second XV turned their attention to the Division 1 Jug competition.

Kendal had been in good form winning their last three matches against Tarleton, Sedgley Park and most recently with a 40 – 26 home win against Birkenhead Park. The Macclesfield second team had won four of their last five games, clinching the NOWRIL Division One league title against Sedgley Park, however in their last outing they were defeated by a very strong Anselmians side.  The squad were hurt by that performance, especially in the first half and were looking to put in a strong display at Priory Park and maintain their undefeated home record.

The next 80 minutes of rugby surprised the Coaches, spectators and stunned the Kendal team, as the seconds put on a display of athletic and skilful rugby that Kendal had no answer too. By half time the seconds had racked up a 59-point lead including nine tries. Jonny Thompson with a hat-trick, Tom Leicester with a brace of tries and Lloyd Smith- Coates, Sam Davies, James Brocklehurst, Carl Droy all contributing with tries.

At half time the impact players of Louis Gray, Roan Elliot and Will Richardson were brought on, Kendal enjoyed a period of good possession but were not able to break a solid blue line of defence. As the newly introduced players found their feet and moved the ball quickly several tries quickly followed from James Wright, a second for Carl Droy and Sam Davies, Hector Tomlinson with a brace, Roan Elliot and Will Richardson also scoring.

Jonny Thompson on his way to his hat-trick

All credit to Kendal for keeping going for 80 minutes and they scored the try of the day, a beautifully waited cross field kick was collected by the right wing to run in unopposed, much to the delight and applause of a sporting home crowd.  Normal service was resumed with Tom Leicester scoring his third, Jonny Thompson with his fourth, whilst James Brocklehurst concluding the try fest. Louis Gray and Isaac Reaney added to the score sheet sharing 26 points from conversions. An outstanding performance, which may well be a club record. Moving forward the seconds now face defending champions Birkenhead Park away in the semi-final on Saturday.

NOWIRUL Division 1 Jug Semi Final Preview

Macclesfield seconds cruised into the semi-final with a convincing win over Kendal at Priory Park on Saturday. A much stiffer test awaits as the side travels to Birkenhead Park, the current holders of the NOWIRUL Division 1 Jug.

The sides have met twice this season with the Macclesfield winning on both occasions. Coach Russ Tomlinson’s team will not be taking things for granted as Birkenhead pose a significant challenge with a well organised and large pack who like to maul and attack around the fringes.

In this seasons meetings the seconds have played well for long periods of the game but have allowed Birkenhead to stay in the game, Birkenhead are tenacious and had a convincing 62 – 0 home win over Firwood Waterloo in their last group match. With the club tour taking place this weekend a number of players are unavailable, however this allows   Sam Davies, Ted Broadley and Roan Elliott from the colts to keep their places in the side.  A win this weekend will set up a final against Anselmians next Saturday.

WEEKEND ROUNDUP - and what a weekend.
