Colts Halbro League Shield Final

Macclesfield v Liverpool Collegiate

Kick-off 11.00 am, Eccles Rugby Club

The Senior Colts, which is a combination of U17s and U18s, climax their season with the chance of more silverware for the Club and for some, a fitting end to their time in the Youth section, as they make the transition into Senior Rugby during the summer. Russ Tomlinson has worked with the boys on their journey and development. Before their training session last night, Acting Head Coach, Darren Lamon joined the boys to give them some advice and inspiration before the big game.

Russ created a match-day session for the boys last night: “Sadly the session conflicted with the Cheshire trials, so we were missing some of the boys, but we went through the set pieces and game plays just the same. The boys have been without some of the King’s lads throughout the season, but we will all come together again on Saturday. The players have really developed throughout the season, both individually and now into a bonded team”. Russ will stay on as Coach and in charge of Transition; he will also have the help of an international forward and Premiership player – more of that to follow.

Youth Chairman and Colts’ Manager Phil Mason, was excited about Sunday’s contest and the Colts hunt for silverware: “The sides have only met once this season, with Macclesfield taking a convincing 7 – 35 win at their place in the league, however Liverpool went on to top the Senior D league so they will be up for a big game.

The Colts had some tough competition on their route to the finals; a 24 – 7 win at home against West Park St Helens looked flattering on the scoreboard, however it was a hard-fought contest on the day with West Park unlucky not to make the most of a number of opportunities.

Lessons learned, for the semi-final, away to Burnley, it was a huge game and with Macclesfield short of numbers, due to conflicting matches elsewhere, it was always going to be close; and so it was, with a narrow 19 – 26 win, securing a place in the final”.
