Macclesfield Ladies 52 – Rochdale Ladies 27

By Mary Thorp

Macclesfield Ladies played away against Rochdale Ladies on Saturday with an 11-a-side fixture in perfect conditions. Expectations were low as we were down to nine players, but Rochdale very kindly lent us two players which allowed a competitive game to go ahead.

Rochdale kicked off and the ball was well received by Mel Bramley and taken into contact. Following a few passages of play, Mary Thorp broke through the line, drawing the defense with a pass back to Mel in support who scored under the sticks, converted 7-0. After the restart, some strong carries from forwards Mandy Rosser and Julia Ashford pushed us closer to the halfway line. Shipping the ball, Mel Bramley passed to Mary Thorp at 10 who stepped inside, broke through and scored. Converted once again by Mel, score 14-0 to Macclesfield. After this initial victory, Macclesfield gained confidence and momentum continuing in attack. The ball was shipped out wide to Katie McCree whose hand-off knocked back three defenders in a row and made it to the try line. Converted by Mel, score 21-0. It wasn’t long after the restart that Steph Knight weaved her way up the pitch, scoring under the posts, 26-0.

Macc Ladies get stuck-in!

Rochdale kicked it up a notch in the second third, whilst Macclesfield tired after their victorious first 20. Despite some cracking defense from Izzy Davies, Julia Ashford and Mandy Rosser, Rochdale managed to score three times by running round the outside, score 26-17. Jamie Haigh put in some huge hits, managing to put the pressure on and get a turn over for Macclesfield. Half way through the 2nd third, Pip Wyer brought us back, handing off several defenders and scoring an epic try, 33-17 to Macclesfield, once again effortlessly converted by Mel Bramley.

A very happy win for the Ladies

Changing ends for the final third, Macclesfield defended tightly in their 22, keeping the score at 33-17. A few breaks by speedsters Steph Knight and Katie McCree brought the score back up to 47-17. Macclesfield maintained possession, moving the ball up the pitch in some simple passages of play. Forwards put a shift in and Mandy Rosser ran some hard lines close to the ruck. The final third ended with a simple hands down the line to Pip Wyer scoring her second try of the game and bringing us to victory at the final whistle. It was a well-deserved first victory of the season for the Ladies, with a final score of 52-27 to Macclesfield.

Next game home vs Rochdale on Saturday 22nd April; bring it on!
